New art gallery opening in Dayton

A new fine art gallery is opening in downtown Dayton.

Edward A. Dixon Gallery, at 12 S. Ludlow St., will have its grand opening in from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22.

The open house will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony, music, and art collected by gallery owner Ed Dixon, plus artwork from a growing list of local artists.

An exhibition called “What Is Art (to you?)” will be on display. A statement about the grand opening said the exhibition explores topics related to the ongoing social debate over what qualifies as “art,” and will grow over time. Pieces will be continually added until the final piece, a manifesto written by Dixon, is unveiled at the end of the exhibition’s run. These new pieces may be inspired by current events or relevant art submitted by local, national or international artists.

Dixon said the gallery is unique in part because of the art’s wide range of origins, with art coming from different periods, styles and geographic locations not always seen in galleries.

“My timing in opening the gallery couldn’t have been better with the way the art community in Dayton is growing and also with the recent news of the neighboring Arcade building being renovated,” Dixon said in a statement. “I expect plenty of excitement in this area in the months and years to come.”

The gallery is now open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
