The 2nd Annual Dayton Barbecue Rodeo will be held April 8. SUBMITTED

The Dayton Barbecue Rodeo will reunite some of the Miami Valley’s best barbecue food trucks for the second annual event on April 8 at the The “Old” Yellow Cab at 700 E. Fourth St. east of downtown Dayton.

“We’re lucky to have some great barbecue being made right here,” Jeff Stringer, organizer of the Barbecue Rodeo and owner of Smokin’ Bee-Bee-Q said. “We were happy with how excited folks seemed in the first year and are excited to bring the Rodeo back to the Yellow Cab.”

The event is billed as part barbecue competition and part food truck rally. Participating food trucks will include Smokin’ Bee-Bee-Q, The Beerded Pig, Mind Your P’s & Q’s BBQ, Texas Beef and Cattle Company, Pa’s Pork, Jolly Jack’s Catering & BBQ, Southern Roots BBQ, S&S Meat House, and Jim Dandy’s Family BBQ. Dessert vendors will be announced in the weeks ahead.

This year’s Barbecue Rodeo also will include an amateur competition in which four teams of aspiring entrepreneurs or backyard enthusiasts can have their barbecue evaluated by Kansas City Barbecue Society standards, organizers of the event said in a release. The winning team will receive a trophy and cash prize.

“Beyond the trucks, we know that there are a lot of talented cooks out there and we wanted to invite them in,” Stringer said. “This is a great opportunity to get some feedback from folks that really know their stuff.”

Attendees to the Barbecue Rodeo will determine the winners of a People’s Choice Contest. The competing trucks will prepare 170 pounds of pulled pork and while supplies last, admission includes a sample from each competitor.

“We had a great response in spite of the weather last year,” Stringer said. “Don’t let 170 pounds fool you though. If you want to come out and try all of that amazing pulled pork, I’d get here early.”

Live entertainment is planned, and local craft beer will be sold.

The event at The Yellow Cab will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. April 8. Admission is $2 — free for children 12 and under.
