Punk band Skrt to release new album at Blind Bob’s

Local punk band Skrt started creating its ferocious sonic brew as a two-piece in 2013. Abbie Romero (drums) and Ashley Pooler (vocals, guitar) upped the chaos in 2016 with the addition of Micah Kemplin (bass). That expanded sound is showcased on Skrt’s debut full-length album, “Toxic Schlock,” (FFF Records), being released at Blind Bob’s in Dayton on Saturday, April 29.

Derek Gullet of Dirty Socialites and FFF Records, who recorded the songs on “Toxic Schlock,” recently sat down with the members of Skrt to discuss the new release.

BUILDING THE TEAM

Pooler: "I've known Abbie almost 10 years. We were in several other bands together before this but we got to the point where we didn't want to be in other dudes' bands. We started talking and decided to start this project."

Kemplin: "I first heard them at Sideshow 9. Even before I saw them I instantly knew this was a band I hadn't heard before and I loved it."

Pooler: "We had a lot of people approach us about playing bass but we resisted until Micah came along."

Romero: "We needed him. We got to the point where we couldn't be any louder. His arsenal of amp knowledge allowed us to add that extra amount."

Kemplin: "I didn't have a bass at the time. I bought one real quick. I came over to practice with them and it came together pretty quickly."

Romero: "That was such a beautiful moment. I couldn't have been happier with the sound Micah produced. It really helped make us sound better."

HARNESSING THE MAGIC

Pooler: "We had already started recording when Micah joined the band. We had done some songs but we decided to go back and do them again with him because the songs had changed a bit."

Gullett: "The recording was adequate the first time through but I knew we could do better. It was nice to be able to record again. I tried some different things that worked better to capture the live energy of the three of them playing together."

Pooler: "Working with Derek was great. He had all of these ideas. We overdubbed vocals and things like that and we'd never done that before. Derek took what we did and made it awesome."

Romero: "It took us a long time to do anything so we're excited to finally release the album and have people hear it. We have some shows coming up but for now we're just going to keep writing so it won't take so long for the next one to come out."
