Gregory’s career began to take off in the politically charged 1960s, when his humor and social commentary were very timely. But he’s remained successful in mixing his humor with his sense of social justice over the last several decades.

From protest marches and sit-ins to becoming a write-in candidate in the 1968 presidential election — in which he received 1.5 million votes — Gregory has put his time and efforts where his heart and mind have been, regardless of how controversial those concepts may be.

The 84-year-old cancer survivor also has released more than a dozen albums and books throughout his career, including two autobiographies.
