Ollie’s Place to host first-ever wine dinner, & the menu may surprise you

Ollie's Place in Washington Twp. will host its first-ever wine dinner on Wednesday, Feb. 28, and the five-course menu created for the special event may broaden the horizons of wine lovers a bit.

Ollie’s restaurant and pub is known primarily as a beer and bourbon destination, and its head chef, Rashan Williams, has embraced that reputation rather than running from it in his special menu for the wine dinner, utilizing beer and bourbon in sauces and preparations in each of the five courses.

Michael Freeman from the Mason-based wine distributor Vintner Select selected the wines to pair with Williams' dishes. Freeman has worked with Ollie's Place to expand the retail shop's wine selection, and the shop has launched weekly wine tastings on Saturday afternoon.

The special wine dinner will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 28 at 518 Miamisburg-Centerville Road (Ohio 725). The cost is $60 plus tax and tip. Reservations are required. For more information, call (937) 723-8998.

By the way, if you were wondering about that 2006 Italian red, I was too, and I contacted Freeman about it, thinking that the vintage year might be a typo. Turns out it isn’t.

The wine has been resting comfortably at the Malvira winery in Roero, Piedmont. “It’s a special cellar release that we’ve had access to for the past 12 months or so,” Freeman said. It’s a blend of Barbera, Nebbiolo, and Bonarda.
