The festival takes place on June 24th in Sparta, Kentucky. People gather by the thousands to let these paper lanterns illuminate the night’s sky.

Worried about the environmental effects? Not to worry, these lanterns are reportedly 100 percent biodegradable. The festival also employs “professional ‘Lantern Chasers’” to clean-up the mess.

Historically lanterns were used to symbolize good fortune, request favorable weather, or to celebrate the life of a loved one. The Lantern Festival encourages its attendees to find their own meaning of the event and to, of course, snap plenty of Instagrams. 📷
