This weekend, Fifth Street Brewpub celebrates three years of being the only cooperatively owned craft brewery in Dayton. Since it's Fifth Street's third birthday, it only seems right that the festivities will extend for three days, from Friday, June 19 to Sunday, June 21.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Throughout the weekend, FSB will celebrate with beer and food pairings, merchandise giveaways, contests and drink specials.  Here are some things to look forward to:

Friday

  • Live music in the Biergarten starting at 7 p.m. featuring Kevin Brown, followed by Mark Kroos.
  • Photo-op with the "Big Ole' Beer" for anyone. Members can enter the "I Own a Brewpub" selfie photo contest for a chance to win one of three $100 FSB gift certificates. To enter, take a selfie at the FSB selfie station and post to social media with the hashtag ‪#‎iownabrewpub and tag @fifthstbrewpub.

Saturday

  • $3 FSB Beer Pints all day
  • Libby's Luscious Layers will serve mini cupcakes baked with FSB beer.

Sunday

  • $5 off growlers
  • Unveiling of five specialty beer cocktails including the Cure-All BeerGarita and CoCo Jo Jo's Float

HOW CO-OP WORKS

FSB is one of the few co-op brewpubs in the state and, according to its website, is the fastest growing brewpub co-op in the nation. So what is a co-op anyway? And why is everyone rushing to become a member?

A co-op is a democratically run business that exists to serve its member-owners. Each member-owner has an equal share of the company, meaning each member is entitled to one vote. Since membership is over 2,700 and growing, an elected Board of Directors oversees most of the decision-making.  A co-op is inherently not for profit, so any profits are reinvested into the company, donated to local charities, or distributed back to the member-owners based on patronage.

Owning a brewpub has its perks. Members are entitled to price breaks, exclusive member-only events, a chance to enroll in home brew and cooking competitions and more.

The cost to join is a one-time fee of $125 for lifetime membership. Specific perks include 50 cents off draft beer and $2 off food specials.

THE BASICS

The brewpub is open seven days a week to the general public. The menu includes appetizers, soup, salads and sandwiches, and offers a selection of core beers plus seasonal beers and rotating special taps.
