Local boy competes on Chopped Junior

Caanan Smith has so much more going for him than just sharing a name with a country music star.

The Oakwood native and marshmallow entreprenuer was one of the contestants on the popular Food Network program Chopped Junior in June.

Yes, you read that right. When not competing for cooking fame, Caanan runs his own homemade, all-natural gourmet marshmallow business, The Marshmallows Company, with the help of his parents and his younger brother.

According to his business' website, Caanan began dreaming of making marshmallows at four years old while watching clouds roll by. A year later netted him his first sale, and shortly thereafter a business was born. Caanan and his marshamallows have been featured on The Suze Orman Show, as well as in local print and coffee shops. His concoctions are available for both wholesale and retail, with a percentage of his proceeds being donated to Heifer International.

Caanan hopes for the delectible delights to be in grocery stores nationwide, and possibly for sale on QVC.
