Dayton's first “catfe” announces planned location

Hold on to your catnip -- Dayton is getting it's first "catfe" this spring.

Gem City Catfe has announced they have a location under contract at 1513 E. 5th St. in St. Anne's Hill. Closing is set for the end of the month, and construction is planned for January.

The catfe aims to open in spring 2017.

"We had looked at this location previously, but really wanted to explore our options in Dayton. Ultimately, when the building became available a second time, we knew it was a sign. We were meant to be in St. Anne's Hill", says Sabrina Cox, Cat Operations Officer for Gem City Catfé.

The hybrid coffee shop and feline adoption center will offer a full-service espresso bar serving unique coffee and tea beverages and pre-packaged snacks. There will be a separate cat lounge. The upstairs will provide space for community events and a rotating art gallery.

“The people of Dayton are incredibly supportive of growing their community and we are excited to become a part of that energy," said co-owner and Dayton transplant Karin Gudal-Johnson.

"We're passionate about Dayton and hope to become a community meeting spot while promoting animal welfare and adoptable cats," said Gudal-Johnson.
