You can officially get this Dayton brewery’s beers in a can for the first time ever TODAY

The Dayton brewing renaissance takes another step forward today as the first brewery to open in the city in nearly five decades releases its beers in cans for the first time.

Toxic Brew Company, 431 E. Fifth St., will offer a collaboration beer called Turnt Out, an unfiltered Double IPA brewed in collaboration with Nowhere In Particular, and its Practice Yoga, a session IPA and one of its signature beers. The beers will be sold in four-packs of pint (16-ounce) cans, and will go on sale in the brewery tasting room at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5.

Toxic Brew founder Shane Juhl credited Pat Sullivan, who brews for Toxic Brew and is also founder of the Nowhere in Particular, for “blazing the way” by arranging for a portable canning unit and hooking Toxic Brew up with can and label suppliers Sullivan has utilized as a “gypsy brewer” to can his Nowhere in Particular beers.

“I’ve wanted to package Toxic Brew for some time now, and this helped get us over that initial energy barrier and get our product into cans,” Juhl said. “Pat helped with the beer and processes when we were co-brewmasters at Toxic Brew together, and he continues to help Toxic when his gypsy brewing lifestyle gives him time.”

Sullivan said, “I don’t get back to Dayton as much as I’d like, but I always love to check up on Toxic and help when I can.”

Juhl said his brewery’s first packaged product “opens a whole new window for us, and will help us reach a whole new group of potential customers.”

The canned beers will be sold only at the brewery. But in the future, Toxic Brew’s canned beers will likely go into retail distribution, Toxic Brew founder Shane Juhl said.

“We will definitely be canning some more Toxic Brew,” Juhl said.

Three local breweries — Warped Wing, Yellow Springs Brewery and Dayton Beer Company — are canning beer for retail sales throughout the Dayton area and beyond.

The milestone for Toxic Brew comes as the Miami Valley is adding two new breweries. Heavier Than Air Brewing Co. opened last week in Washington Twp., and Lock 27 opens a new location next to Fifth Third Field in downtown Dayton on Tuesday, Sept. 5, the same day as the Toxic release.

Toxic Brew celebrated its fourth anniversary earlier this year. A year ago, the brewery purchased land along the Great Miami River north of Dayton, and has plans for a production brewery and taproom there. The project has encountered potential regulatory obstacles, and Juhl said he has applied for an exemption to wellfield protection restrictions that would pave the way for the project to move forward.
