Dayton-area distillery to release two new bourbons

Stillwrights celebrates barrels’ 4th birthday, eyes cask-strength and single-barrel spirits

The Stillwrights distillery celebrated the fourth birthday of some of its filled bourbon barrels yesterday, May 10, and is gearing up for the prospective release of two new bourbons, one bottled at cask strength and another from a single barrel.

“It’s a milestone for us,” said Brad Measel, co-founder of Flat Rock Spirits — which bottles under the Stillwrights brand at its distillery at 5380 Intrastate Drive near I-675 and Ohio 444 in Bath Twp. near Fairborn.

Measel tapped and offered samples from some of the bourbon casks Tuesday night at the distillery, obtaining feedback and suggestions from attendees such as Michael Schwartz, owner of Ollie’s Place in Washington Twp. and Belmont Party Supply in Dayton, and Joseph Head, co-owner of The Century Bar in downtown Dayton.

Measel said he hopes to have the new bourbon or bourbons available by the holidays, depending on federal label reviews and other factors.

Stillwrights won a gold medal last year for its Stillwrights Straight Bourbon Whiskey in the 2015 American Craft Spirits Association (ACSA) Spirits competition held in Austin, Texas. The competition drew 329 entries from more than 200 craft spirits distilleries from across the country. Two other Flat Rock Spirits products — Stillwrights Silver Rum and Stillwrights Bourbon Barrel Aged Rum — also won medals.

Stillwrights also produces Spiced Rum, Key Lime Pie Moonshine, Margarita Moonshine, Apple Pie Moonshine, Peach Cobbler Moonshine, Cinnamon Moonshine and Traditional Recipe Moonshine.

Flat Rock Spirits is owned by brothers Brad and Shawn Measel, and their cousin James Bagford. For more information, call (937) 879-4447 or check out the Stillwrights Facebook page.
