Local food-truck pioneer puts cupcake business up for sale

Jenny Cox figures it’s time to let somebody else have the kind of fun that she’s had for the past six years.

"This has brought me so much joy and happiness," Cox said of her "Go Cupcake" food-truck business that was the first mobile cupcake unit in the Dayton area when it made its debut in August 2011. "But it's time to move on and give someone else a chance to own the best business in the world."

Cox has put the food truck and business up for sale on eBay. The starting bid is $39,000.

The food truck owner is a lawyer by training, and she is shifting gears on her career. For more than a year, she has been serving as a “guardian ad litem,” a person appointed by a judge to advocate for the best interests of children involved in court proceedings such as divorce or custody issues or neglect cases.

“It is hard to balance both things,” Cox said. “I always anticipated a five-year time horizon with Go Cupcake, and it’s been six.”

There have been many highlights during those six years, ranging from delivering cupcakes to every employee of the Xenia school district while accompanied by its superintendent, to a five-minute voicemail from a very happy customer effusively praising a particular flavor of cupcake.

“And I enjoyed getting to know the local food-truck community,” Cox said. “They are awesome.”

And she said she will always remember “the anticipatory looks on the faces of the children” as they approached the Go Cupcake food truck.

The eBay auction includes the food truck itself — a 2008 Freightliner/Mercedes 2500 Sprinter Van with about 100,000 miles on it — as well as the business name, cupcake recipes and equipment.

“It’s an amazing turnkey opportunity,” Cox said.

No one had bid on the business as of Tuesday morning, May 30. The initial 10-day auction window ends June 5.

Here’s how Cox is describing the opportunity on eBay:

“Go Cupcake has enjoyed six outstanding years of successful business ventures, celebrating weddings, business events, birthday parties, serving at numerous venues including athletic fields, art museums, neighborhood block parties and Food Truck Festivals (selling more than 4,000 cupcakes over two days at the Columbus Food Truck Festival), and adding a festive touch to countless special occasions in southwest Ohio and beyond.

“The current ownership of Go Cupcake must reluctantly sell this profitable and rewarding business in order to pursue other endeavors, and this unique business opportunity is your chance to work in an satisfying environment of your own making, creating cupcake joy in your corner of the world. Absolutely everything you need to begin your own food truck adventure is all packed up in the fabulous Go Cupcake Food Truck.”
