Dayton’s Christmas cheer is captured in these vintage photographs

The joy and good cheer of the Christmas season in Dayton has been captured in vintage photographs.

Here are three things to know about the city’s love of the season:

1. Flying reindeer. Santa Claus, pulled by 7 pairs of reindeer, flew across the side of the Rike's department store building. At night the scene was illuminated and could be seen from blocks away.

2. A gift for the city. Dayton philanthropist Virginia Kettering started the communities first holiday celebration, "One World of Christmas," the forerunner of today's downtown Dayton Holiday Festival.

3. Holiday lights.  Glowing red candles tipped with white flames created holiday ambiance attached to light posts along Main Street.
