Why this iconic Dayton food is in a new Christmas horror movie about cannibalism

An iconic Dayton snack with crunch has made its way into a bone-crushing Hollywood bloodbath.

Ryan Nelson, the co-writer and director of "Mercy Christmas," said the keen observer will see a bag of Mikesell's potato chips in the movie, a dark comedy about cannibalism and the holiday spirit.

“We put Mikesell’s in Mercy Christmas with their permission. The dad character eats from a bag of chips in one scene. We also put them in a couple short films we did before Mercy,” Nelson, a Centerville grad,  said via email. “I loved Mikesell’s bar-b-cue and groovy chips growing up. I plan to put them in every project my production company does, sorta my Easter egg for Dayton.”

Born in Indianapolis, Nelson moved to Centerville in the fourth grade and graduated from Centerville High School in 1998.

Nelson and his wife, Beth, are writing "Margo Lives," a vigilante/dark humor movie to be filmed in Centerville about a woman fed up with the opioid crisis. She goes after drug dealers.
