Yellow Springs Brewery to host ‘metamorphosis party’

Yellow Springs Brewery is unveiling a new look to celebrate its significant expansion and early success — and it will host a “Metamorphosis Party” on Nov. 11 to toast its new direction, co-founders Nate Cornett and Lisa Wolters announced today, Monday Oct. 24.

A new logo — created by Kettering-based, Grammy-Award-winning artist Don Pendleton — will be incorporated into the brewery's labeling and new can designs. Pendleton is a celebrated graphic artist whose artwork has adorned skateboarding brands Alien Workshop and Element and also has been incorporated into Vans shoes.

The new YSB logo incorporates an eagle as well as a heart and a symbol for a hop cone.

“The eagle has long been a visual part of Yellow Springs Brewery’s dream, and it’s now moving into the starring role,” Wolters said in a release. “Eagles can mean a lot of things — freedom, strength, vision — but to Yellow Springs Brewery, the eagle suggests a certain spirit. A spirit that means you have the freedom, strength and vision to reach higher, to not just accept the status quo, to embrace new perspectives, to dream.”

The brewery, which opened in April 2013, added 1,600 square feet and new production equipment to its brewhouse and tasting room at 305 N. Walnut St. last year to help accommodate retail sales of canned beers. And this year, it purchased the former Village Lanes bowling alley at 1475 Xenia Ave. in Yellow Springs for use as a distribution center. A “cold room” for storage of beer for distribution is already in operation at the site.

YSB beers are now available in kegs and cans across the Miami Valley from Wapakoneta to northern Cincinnati, and in the Columbus area. Wolters said the Cincinnati market south of I-275 will be the next target for the brewery’s expanded footprint, although no timetable has been set.

The Metamorphosis Party will be held from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Nov. 11 at the brewery’s tasting room in Yellow Springs. Pendleton’s fine-art paintings will be on display alongside his new can designs for Yellow Springs Brewery.

Six-packs of Captain Stardust Saison and Zoetic American Pale Ale in the newly created cans featuring Pendleton’s artwork will be available for purchase for the first time at the Nov. 11 party. The first 100 individuals to buy a six-pack will receive a commemorative pub glass, featuring the new logo, Wolters said.

The tap list for the Metamorphosis Party will include several variations on two YSB crowd-pleasers, Captain Stardust Saison and Zoetic American Pale Ale. Brewmaster Jeffrey McElfresh plans to open with seven variations on tap and add several surprises throughout the evening, such as Captain Stardust sour cherry, Stardust biscotti and barrel-aged Gindust as well as Zoetic with mangoes and Zoetic with habanero. Beginning at 5 p.m., a variation will be added each hour.

New brand merchandise will be available for purchase in the taproom as will a sneak peek of additional beers to be canned in the near future. Local food truck Harvest Mobile Cuisine will serve Captain Stardust brats created by Keener Farms.
