DONUT WARS: Tim Horton’s to open 10 Dayton-area shops, challenge Dunkin’
And Liguori said plans for a new Tim Hortons planned for the Airway Shopping Center were approved by Riverside officials this week. The 2,100-square-foot restaurant will seat 27 inside and 12 more on an outside patio, and will employ about 30, he said.
Franchisee officials are “in the final stages” of negotiations on two more restaurants, Liguori said. He declined to disclose their locations until the final deals are struck.
The current flurry of activity builds on the openings in late December of Tim Hortons in at 3010 Kettering Blvd. just south of West Dorothy Lane in Moraine, and at 1998 W. Main St. near Meijer in Troy.

The openings are part of an aggressive expansion that could bring seven to 10 new Tim Hortons locations over the next three years — in a direct challenge to competitor Dunkin’ Donuts.
“Tim Hortons is a solid brand … it attracts customers in all times of the day,” Tabbassum Mumtaz, CEO of Ampex Brands, the restaurant chain’s Ohio franchisee, told this news outlet late last year. And the Dayton area is where the Tim Hortons franchisee is “looking forward to competing with Dunkin’ Donuts,” Mumtaz said.

Texas-based Ampex Brands operates several other franchise restaurants, including Long John Silver’s, Taco Bell, A&W Restaurants and KFC restaurants, in 17 states. It is also expanding the Tim Hortons footprint in the Columbus and central Ohio area.
Dunkin’ Donuts is in the midst of its own aggressive expansion in the region. It has opened five Dayton-area restaurants in the last three years under franchise owner Pat Gilligan, including, late last year, a location on Woodman Drive in Riverside. Other new Dunkin’ Donuts shops have opened in Sugarcreek Twp., Springfield, Kettering, and Centerville.
