I love a deal and I love an adventure. So when the two cross paths, I am almost always game.
I was out not long ago starting my weekend off right with a group of friends when one of them delved into a story about the “fabulous gas station chicken” that they said everyone was talking about.
We were out enjoying happy hour at a restaurant in the Oregon District at the time, and based on several others chiming in who had also tried and loved it, the group swiftly decided there was only one option for dinner.
We promptly picked up from the Shell gas station near Town and Country and the group planned a rendezvous at our friends home with enough chicken to feed a small army.
The chicken in question comes from Krispy Krunchy Chicken (www.krispykrunchy.com), one of the fastest growing convenience store based quick-service restaurant concepts in the country. The first store opened in 1989 in Lafayette, Louisiana in a small chain of convenience stores and has seen incredible growth since with more than 1,800 locations now open in 36 states.
The Krispy Krunchy Chicken at the Shell station on Far Hills in Kettering has been opened for around a year, but a brand new location at 100 N. James H. McGee Blvd. just opened March 26 with hundreds of mostly positive comments from customers posting on the businesses Facebook account saying it’s well worth the wait. There are four area Krispy Krunchy locations total with the Shell gas station in Germantown and the B & B Carryout in Waynesville finishing up the list.
The steamy boxes of chicken we opened were fresh and moist with large meaty pieces of legs, thighs, wings and breasts enclosed in a golden exterior that more than earned its crispy, crunchy moniker. The cajun season infused in the breading adds some heat, kick and welcome flavor.
It’s a terrific option for parties as our mighty group proved. Krispy Krunchy Chicken offers a 25-piece mix of light and dark pieces for $33.99 averaging out to a very reasonable $1.35 per piece.
It’s also a solid option for lunch while you’re out and about, or for dinner for the family, with two pieces ranging from $3.99-$4.99 and four pieces ranging from $6.99-$7.49 with the addition of a side and a drink contributing $2.50 to the overall bill.
A chicken and tenders family combo is $29.99 that comes with 12 juicy pieces of chicken, 6 piece cajun tenders, 6 biscuits and a large fry.
SIDES AND EXTRAS
There are sides like Mac-n-cheese ($2.49 for a small and $3.69 for a large), but keep your eye on the crunchy prize with a honey butter biscuit (69 cents each) thrown in for good measure.
Cajun style fried fish and crispy shrimp are also available as dinner or lunchtime options.
CRAFT BEER ON TAP
In addition to having terrific, hot food, about six months ago the Town and Country Shell Station added 16 craft beer taps for 32-ounce and 64-ounce growler fills. Selections rotate twice a month with a few customer favorites like White Rajah, Ermal’s Belgian Style Cream Ale, Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale and Rhinegeist Truth staying on the menu.
For just one dollar customers can try four 2-ounce pours of beer to decide what they want to purchase. It’s the best deal in town to try new beers, just bring a driver if you’re going to do a true tasting.
So there’s gas, all the creature comforts that a convenience store has to offer, a diverse selection of craft beer, a large selection of wines and enough zesty, zippy chicken to feed an entire famished party of food travelers looking for last-minute tasty deals?
“We have the best Shell in Dayton, Ohio,” clerk Jessica Payne said to me on a recent visit when she was walking me through all the amenities her favorite Shell station offers.
I have to say that I have to agree.
