An array of cupcakes from Twist Cupcakery in downtown Dayton.

Those sweet and savory palm-sized desserts called cupcakes can be found sprinkled throughout the area in all types of traditional and special flavors.

To our delight, many local brands have made the national spotlight, whether appearing on a TV show or garnering prestigious awards.

While we found dozens of great bakeries in and around Dayton – and trust us, there are a lot – here are six locations well worth the visit (and the calories).

The baby cupcake shop in Dayton, which has been around for about a year, draws plenty of sweet teeth. Each cupcake is served with a nontraditional “twist,” provided by the baker or at the request of the customer. It has a chic, feminine ambiance with touches of pink and gray.

Pricing: $1.75 for traditional flavors in standard size or $19 for a dozen; $2.25 per “twist” specialty flavors in standard sizing or $24 for a dozen; $1 per mini cupcake or $10 a dozen.

Why? They serve mouth-watering cupcakes in “twisted” flavors like chicken and waffles, Fruity Pebbles, and Girl Scout Thin Mints. Their fillings are fresh ingredients like fresh fruit or fresh sweet potatoes (nothing canned!).

One of the most well-known cupcake shops, this chain company made headlines when founder and owner Gina “Gigi” Butler took disguise on the show, Undercover Boss in Season 6, Episode 11, recording her thoughts and prayers.

Pricing: $3.25 per standard-sized cupcake or $32.50 for a dozen; $15 for a dozen mini cupcakes

Recommended Flavors: Wedding Cake, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

Why? A frosting aficionado? “Gigi’s swirl,” the rich, sugary frosting piled high on the cake makes these cupcakes one-of-a-kind. They do good, too, offering student and military discounts. They also donate cupcakes to local businesses, and their vegan cupcakes are sent to the Health Food Store. Whenever a baby is born at Raj Soin Medical Center, the Beavercreek location sends a free cupcake to the baby’s parents.
