If you're a longtime reader of this blog, you know I love my summer festivals. One of my local favorites is most certainly Hog Jam ! It's special for many reasons: some of my favorite festival memories were made there (i.e. Norman from The Werks playing on a burning piano), it always brings together some of my fave people on the planet, and most importantly, it showcases so many awesome musical acts!
This year marks the 12th Hog Jam, which is a lifetime for local festivals! It's certainly a labor of love, and you get that vibe the moment you step onto the beautiful, shaded grounds at the VFW Campground in Franklin (right off I75), where this year's festival takes place. No one is a stranger, families are welcome, and smiles abound! And as the name implies, there is a hog roast! Prepare to break bread and have a good ole time with friends!
I'm so excited about the line-up this year, which includes Dawg Yawp, Subterranean, Johnny Neel (from the Allman Brothers), Brooks Daugherty (Nashville), Jonny Dreads & The Mystiks, Arrows of Neon, Electric Orange Peel, In Ten Cities, Roanoke, Sharon Lane, Jack Ballengee-Morris (yes, he's related!), Charlie Tipton, Truk, The Vibe, Kommunity Service, The Great Northern String Band, and many more!
Tickets are just $50 for the entire 2-day weekend, Friday August 25th (4pm-2am) & Saturday August 26th (11am-2am), which includes camping! Site address: 8718 Claude-Thomas Rd, Franklin, OH 45005. Get more details on the event here, including full schedule of events. Or listen to my interview with Hog Jam founder, Tony Herdman, on Gem City Podcast here.
This weekend you can also enjoy the Clifton Gorge Music & Arts Festival , also running Friday August 25th (4pm-11pm) & Saturday August 26th (10am-11pm). There are tons of activities planned at this festival, which most definitely includes live music. Enjoy songs and sounds from Eric Jerardi, The Hoppers, Spanish tony Sanchez, The Andrews Sisters, Ragtime Riverboat Rats, The Steve Lewis Band, Gin Soaked Angels, Richard Lynch Band, Todd the Fox and more! For more click here .
Last but certainly not least is the 9 Year Anniversary Party at Blind Bob's ! They have the weekend absolutely packed with awesome rock'n'roll, including: Cadaver Dogs, Yardboss, The Jasons, Red Hot Rebellion on Friday. Saturday brings in Weathervein, The Flips (Chicago), Pelafina (Chicago), and Black Sire. They wrap it up Sunday with Lia Menaker, Zack Sliver, Kyla Meainous, and Nolan Taylor. All shows are $5, 21+, and start at 9P.M. This is one of the most supportive venues in town for original local music, so make sure you stop by and show them some love! Friday August 25th
Friday night brings us RIND 's CD release party for their self-titled, full length album "Rock is Not Dead." Their good friends, Salvadore Ross and Stella's Demise will be performing as well. The band promises an amazing sound and light show at Yellow Cab. This sounds like a rockin' good time! Please support and celebrate with RIND! $5 cover at the door. 21+ up. Music at 9PM.
You can also catch Ellis Dyson & The Shambles and Todd the Fox at the Trolley Stop. Ellis Dyson & the Shambles blends old-time influences ranging from Piedmont murder ballads, to Dixieland, to big band swing. The result: whiskey-soaked, foot-stompin’ songs that bring party music of departed eras to crowds both young and old. Music starts at 9:30PM with a $5 cover. 21+
Blues fans will be loving The Doug Hart Band at Oregon Express on Friday night. Music starts around 9:30PM with a $5 cover. 21+
Another hot show to catch is Taylor McGuff's birthday bash at Jimmie's Ladder 11, featuring Sunset Junkies, Motel Faces, and of course, McGuff and the Dumpster Fires. $5 door. Music 10pm-2am.
Saturday August 26th
The fun gets going super early in the Oregon District on Saturday with District Day! It's a Block Party extraordinaire! This family-friendly party is open to the public and will feature live music, dancing, games, face painting, and a beer garden with local brews. The event will be emceed by WYSO Radio's "Behind the Groove" DJ, Basim Blunt.
Music line up includes:
1:30 - Salvadore Ross
2:30 - Funk Lab Dance Center
3:30 - Zane and The Sway
4:30 - John Wing
5:00 - Subterranean
During or after District Day, boogie on over to St Anne's Hill (just a 1/2 mile down the street from the Oregon District), for Dayton's first ever Dayton Porchfest. I'm personally proud and honored to be part of this special community-building event, facilitated by downtown's own Collaboratory , which launches exciting new projects from idea to reality.
One of those ideas is Porchfest, which is held on International Play Music on a Porch Day, offering free mini concerts held on porches throughout the St. Anne's Hill. Meet the neighborhood and support local music at the first of what will be an annual festival celebrating the quality and diversity of the Dayton music scene. Music can be found at 4th St, Dutoit St, and Henry St. Map here.
Kickoff - 3:30 - 3:45pm TRSS Drum Corps at Fourth and Henry Streets

Fun keeps going late night in the District with Terrance Simien & The Zydeco Experience at Trolley Stop. For 35 years, two- time Grammy award winning artist Terrance Simien, 8th generation Louisiana Creole has been shattering the myths about what his indigenous Zydeco roots music is and is not. Music starts at 9:30PM with a $5 cover. 21+
One of my fave musical movies is showing at Victoria Theatre: The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Individual tickets are available at the Victoria Theatre Box Office one hour prior to showtime for $6. Lobby doors will open at 9:30 p.m. with a cash bar, and "survival kits" for the show. Showtime 10:30pm. Stop by early at 10 p.m. for music from c.wright's Parlour Tricks before each Reel Late at the Vic film this summer. Always a blast with C. Wright!
Check out Blues virtuoso Scotty Bratcher at Oddbody's Music Room Saturday night. He's fantastic! Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 day of show. 18+ Doors 7pm. Show 8pm
Ryan Judy, who is well known from his bluegrass band Sawgrass, is back in town and performing at Peach's Grill on Saturday night. A fun night for folks in the Springs! Music at 10pm. 21+
The Courtyard Lounge in Englewood is branching out a bit from it's usual hard rock line up, this week featuring the psychedelic rock stylings of the up-and-coming band Salvadore Ross. If you're west of town, get to this show! 9pm-2am. 21+ $5 Cover
During the summer, it's always a Sunday Funday at Jimmie's Ladder 11 from 5-8pm, where they feature local musicians on their acoustic patio. This week features Tod Weidner, The Nautical Theme, and Kent Montgomery. Now that's one sweet afternoon! Enjoy, my friends!
And as always, thank you for supporting live music!
