Well folks, we've made it to the tail end of the music festival season. How many did you get out to? Lots? One? None? Alright, you have one last chance this season, and this is going to be a fabulous weekend weather-wise, plus it's all right downtown. It's time for The Dayton Music Art & Film Festival!

This is the 11th year this multi-venue extravaganza has been running. Organizers are upping the ante this year by adding "Film" to the former "Dayton Music & Art" title. Very cool! I love when the various arts communities come together in solidarity to support each other, and this is a great example of the magic that happens when they do.

DMAFF is not the only magic happening this weekend. Seven of the area's leading performing arts organizations are combining for two special performances of American Mosaic at the Schuster Center. We are so blessed to have seven professional arts organizations in a city our size, and to see them perform together is truly going to be spectacular. Read about these events and more below.

Friday, September 18th

The DMAFF festival kicks off today! Music is spread among four downtown venues: Blind Bob's , Canal Public House , Dublin Pub and The Yellow Cab, and runs from 7:30 p.m. through 2 a.m.

In total there are 18 bands and 1 DJ -- so it can be really tough to decide which show to catch! Babbling April or Human Cannonball? Nightbeast or Me Time? Buffalo Killers or Good English? Ah!! Good luck choosing! Guaranteed to be fun, no matter where you land. Check out the full DMAFF schedule here.

One of the highlights will surely be the Pride Celebration Dance party at Yellow Cab starting at 9:30 p.m. with DJ Barticus. This is one of the free, all-ages portion of the program, and coincides with Yellow Cab's monthly food truck rally. If you're short on funds, there is no excuse to miss this free dance party!

P.S... There is a LOT more to this festival than music, so check out all the programs they have to offer! I'm planning on taking part in the Pink Floyd yoga session, called Floydasana, at K-12/TEJAS Gallery! So cool.

Believe it or not, there is even more music going on downtown that's not part of DMAFF. Incredible! And there are some great shows happening on the outskirts of town as well.

Slightly west of the Oregon District, you can find jazz saxophonist Mr. Edde Osborne performing at

Coffeehouse and Wine Bar. This event kicks off their new Jazz series, which I'm personally really excited about!  There is a small cover charge of $5 for this event. Music starts at 6 p.m. What a lovely way to spend a late summer evening.

Vex is hosting a killer benefit show to help the homeless in Dayton. The five band line-up includes: Jc & the Disappointments , Lyle , Paradigm Shift , Akillis Green , and The Mainline Funk . If you bring a donation for the homeless, entry is $5, otherwise $7. For a list of items in need, please click here.

More in a Blues mood? Noah Wootherspoon is performing his signature style at The Oregon Express.

If you're in the South Park / UD area, check out the Old News with The Dirt Poor Troubadours show at Jimmie's Ladder 11. Enjoy some truly great songwriting for a laid back evening. P.S...For the UD kids who don't know what to do with their parents this weekend, this is a perfect option. Food and tunes you'll all like!

Just wanna dance?? Well if you wander from the free dance party at Yellow Cab over to Therapy Cafe, you can keep the party going! Therapy's Deep House Fridays series features DJ and vocalist Colette. She grew up in the Chicago underground scene, and has evolved into an international star who is praised by Pitchfork, Vibe and Spin Magazine, among many others. Show starts at 9 p.m. Ages 18+. Tickets are $7 pre-sale, $12 at door.

Rap-rock-metal fans: Bonz, with A.D.D. and Throttle, are performing at Oddbody's. Show time is 7 p.m. Ages 18+. Tickets are $8-$12.

In the burbs? Swing by Spinoza's in Beavercreek to see Mr. Neil Jacobs, an acoustic 12-string guitar master. Further north, don't miss Buffalo Wabs & the Price Hill Hustle at Peach's Grill  in Yellow Springs. Down south in Franklin, local country band TRUK will be at JD Legends.

Special Notes to Readers:

First, apologies for skipping last week's blog! Some weeks you just run out of bandwidth, and it happened to me! Thank you for bearing with me.

Second, I'm very excited to announce that I'm reviewing local albums with fellow Dayton.com writer and local musician Vivienne Machi (from Babbling April band). Check out our first article in our new series called "Guided By Noises."

Third, your Dayton Music Insider is representing the Dayton Music scene on a national level, by participating in a celebrity fantasy football league! The inaugural Sirius XM Jam On Fantasy Football Invitational kicked off last week, which includes members of Phish (5th man!), Umphrey's McGee and Disco Biscuits, as well as sports experts from ESPN, NFL Films, CBS Sports, USA Today and Sirius DJs and commentators. Two listeners were picked to join in on this 12-man league, and yours truly made it a 11-man/1-woman league! Follow the fun on Twitter @LibbyBallengee #JamOnFantasyFootball. Score so far: 1-0.

Lastly, I want to say a special "thank you" to all the sponsors that make events like DMAFF and American Mosaic possible, particularly the Miriam Rosenthal Foundation. Please stop and say thank you to a local donor you recognize, or write them a thank-you card! Take note of the companies who contribute to your favorite performances, and if you can, support them! They are generously donating to make events like this possible, and the least we can do is support them with our gratitude and commerce.

As always, thank you for supporting the live music scene in Dayton.

Your Dayton Music Insider,

Libby Ballengee
