Dayton Music Insider: Hannah's Grand Opening!

This weekend has been highly anticipated for many local music fans: a beloved music venue is coming back to life, and we could not be more excited!

When J-Alan's closed a couple years back, it was a sad time for many musicians, and fans such as myself. We so enjoyed the lively nights in this cozy downtown club, located at 121 N Ludlow St, near the Schuster Center.

The awesome news is that the space is opening once again, as Hannah's, and they are celebrating in fine style this weekend! The 2-night extravaganza includes some of the best live music in the city, and from out of town too! Keep reading to find all about it!

Friday June 2nd

Riverscape's free summer music "Pickin' in the Park" series is a great downtown treat! Bring your dancing shoes and a lawn chair for seating in case you need a break. Weather Dependent. All ages.  FREE. 5:30pm - 10:00pm

If you love Mozart, this weekend offers a fantastic chance to listen to his epic Requiem with the Dayton Philharmonic! The All-Mozart Masterworks Program Includes His Beguiling Oboe Concerto and Famous Requiem with Full Choral Forces filling the Schuster Center with the timeless sound of Salzburg's most celebrated genius. Performances are both Friday June 2 and Saturday June 3, both shows starting at 8pm. Tickets start at just $8! Check with Ticket Center Stage for availability.

Late night, head over to the aforementioned Hannah's, for it's opening weekend festivities. Friday night is kicking off with the venue's old house band, Subterranean, who are taking their stage back! They became local rock improv legends on that stage, and they will surely receive a hero's welcome home Friday night. Do not miss it! Music 10pm-2am.

I love the mashups, when arts organizations work together to come up with something entirely fresh and modern. This Saturday we are getting just that with Modern Dance Modern Funk, a collaboration between the Dayton Gay Men's Chorus and the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company at the Victoria Theatre. Wow! I'm so intrigued to check this out!

This work explores the intricacies of racism and homophobia in our culture in America today. Don't miss the one and only performance of this important and groundbreaking collaboration. Show at 8pm. Reserved seating from $23-$33. Purchase tickets by phone at (937) 530-0642 or

Jazz fans – don't forget about the live jazz every single night of the week at Blue Note Bistro & Lounge in Miamisburg. It's a lush setting, with swanky live music. A great place for dates, or meeting up with friends!

Lastly, I'd like to take a moment to pay tribute to the legendary Gregg Allman who passed this week. Hearing "Whipping Post" for the first time was one of those early moments I when I first truly fell in love with rock'n'roll. I fondly remember seeing them several times on one of their infamous NYC Beacon Theatre runs. There was nothing like it! The Allman Brothers were hugely influential, and there sure do leave a big a hole in the music scene, and our hearts. RIP Gregg.

As always, thank you for supporting live music!
