Dayton Music Insider: Jazz Lover's Delight

Jazz Lover's are going to be loving this weekend's shows, which includes female sultry singers performing with the Dayton Philharmonic, and the #1 Louis Armstrong impersonator in the world at Blue Note Bistro.

Don't miss out on this special weekend, and all the amazing shows happening all over the Miami Valley region!

Friday January 26th

This weekend is a Jazz Lover's Delight with Sophisticated Ladies,  as part of  Dayton Philharmonic 's SuperPops series. This performance features Capathia Jenkins, N’Kenge, and Montego Glover, performing classic songs from the tradition of the Harlem Renaissance singers. The playlist includes songs made famous by the legendary ladies of jazz: Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, and Billie Holiday. Sounds amazing! Show at Schuster Center 8pm Friday, January 26 and 8pm Saturday, January 27. Tickets start at $29. Call 228-3630 or ticket availability or visit ticketcenterstage.com.

This weekend also features a double-header charity show: the annual  Restock event.  The benefit puts jam fans and metal fans in a competition to see who can raise the most money and goods for a variety of local charities, especially the Dayton FoodBank.  Restock 2018 Jam Band Night is on Friday night at  Hannah's , featuring Ohio All Stars, Cheezcake, and Brooks Daugherty. Both a talented line-up and a super fun one too! Don't miss out on a great night supporting deserving local charities. Doors 6pm. $20 day of show.

Wanna rock out? Have a couple options on Friday night: You can check out the Surf Rock Show with Dayton's Lucha Rockers  Team Void and Cincinnati's The AmpFibians at Oregon Express. I think we could al use a night where we pretend we're at the beach! 9:30pm. $5 cover. 21+

Or stop by and enjoy The Typical JohnsonsSeth Canan & The Carriers, and  Next To Nowhere at  Oscar's Bar and Grill in Vandalia. They get rave reviews! Definitely worth the trip for this solid line-up. $5 Cover

And for my friends in Yellow Springs, head over to The  Emporium for sultry blues rock with  Rachel Litteral and the Abstracts.  Pair with wine, and it's the perfect way to have a mid-winter warm up! 7-10pm

Saturday January 27th

For Restock 2018 - Metal Band Night  go over to  Oddbody's Music Room  who hosts a night of heavy hitters including  The Reefer Hut, Forces of Nature, Transylvania Hellhounds, Burn the Dead and Dark Soul. Doors and Show at 6pm.  $10 advance. $15.00 day of show. Please note: Ticket sales are limited for this show, so get on it!

I'm also loving the truly rock'n'roll line up at Blind Bob's on Saturday night, featuring  Yardboss, Big Time Pharaohs and Andy Gabbard. 9pm. $5 cover. 21+

Having a casual night out? There's a couple cool cover shows happening in the Oregon District. I don't often mention cover bands, but these are particularly good: Ohio Brass & Electric at the Oregon Express.  And  The Tracers  at Trolley Stop, who play your favorite alt/indie hits from the 80’s and 90’s such as David Bowie, Radiohead, The Cure, and REM. (Some of my personal faves!)

Over at Hannah's on Ludlow, you can enjoy an extra long day of music. Music kicks off early from 5-8pm with an all ages family friendly Blues session. It's an open call for musicians and singers, even kids! Late night  Dropsickle from Columbus, conscious hiphop from Cozmikspirit, and special guest  Kita Carter aka Kita Da Monster and  Willy Clark collectively create a special night of music! 10pm-2am.

Speaking of hip-hop, I just met local hip-hop artist Eman Jones  at a recording of The Gem City Podcast. Look for that coming out soon! His next performance is during "The Vibe Spot" event at  Sheikhs . Love learning about new places! 8pm.

RockStar Pro Arena  presents a heavy night of rock with a slew of popular metal bands, including  Others by No One,   Jackie Frank Russell III - Composer,  Sensei,  The Earth Laid Bare,  and  Lazer Shark. Presales: $10. Doors: 7pm.

North of town, you've got music to enjoy too! Lots of excitement for  Left Lane Cruiser and Barstool Brown at Oscar's Bar  in Vandalia. Get there! $7 cover. Doors at 9pm.

Another highly anticipated show, known as the Bandwagon Session  is happening at  One Eyed Jacks. Get to this venue before it closes forever! 9pm. No cover.

A really interesting way to spend Saturday night is at the Silent Comedy Films with Live Orchestra and Original 1900s Scores!  Enjoy an evening of vintage American entertainment as it was heard a century ago, as the  Paragon Ragtime Orchestra  present The Clown Princes. $22.50 - $33.50. Tickets available online or at 937-324-2712. Tickets also available at John Legend Theater 90 minutes prior to performance.

Last but not least, at  Blue Note Bistro you can catch the  SATCHMO SHOW, a two hour concert, starring the sensational  trumpeter, and #1 Louis Armstrong impersonator in the world, Mr. Dean Simms! Dean Simms musical accomplishments includes the 2013 R&B Hall of Fame Inductee with the Ohio Players Band, among many other accolades. This is certainly one of the don't miss shows of the season! Reservations are recommended. 8-11pm.

As always, thank you for supporting live music!
