Dayton Music Insider: Reflections on losing Dayton music legend Mick Montgomery

This week the Dayton music community suffered an absolutely heartbreaking loss. Mick Montgomery, beloved owner of Canal Street Tavern , passed away in his sleep.

How does one start to describe all that Mick contributed to our community and culture? It's an impossible task. The thing I admired most about him was his single minded determination to bring original music to Dayton. In a time when cover bands dominated the bar scene, Mick wanted his own club, so original musicians had a voice. At Canal St, Mick got to perform his own music, and along the way, inspired countless others to do the same. His tenacity, enthusiasm for all types of music, and many personal sacrifices, helped produce a vibrant Dayton music scene, that is renowned to this day. He leaves behind a legacy that will not soon be forgotten.

More than that, Mick was a true friend, and even father figure, to many. All the music lovers in this town owe him a enormous debt of gratitude for everything he gave us. Thank you, Mick, for the memories, your friendship, and of course, the music. We love you! This weekend, when you're out seeing live music, please raise a glass to his memory.

Saturday January 20th

Saturday is when the Dayton music community collectively celebrates the life of Mick Montgomery. A drop in service will be held from 1-4pm at Tobias Funeral Home at 3970 Dayton Xenia Rd in Beavercreek. Afterwards, at 6pm, his family and friends will gather at The Brightside Event and Music Venue (905 E 3rd St. Dayton, OH) to throw a proper Hootenanny in his honor.

The Hootenanny is a free event that is open to anyone interested in celebrating Mick’s life. It's a family style pot luck, so please bring some kind of dish, desert or snack to share. There is a cash bar (no outside alcohol, please). Non-alcoholic beverages are available as well. Anyone interested in signing up to play a song at the Hootenanny will sign up when they arrive to the event space. Children are welcome earlier in the evening. The event will run until 2am. Parking information is posted on the event page here.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to support the Dayton music community and the folks at Bright Side: https://www.youcaring.com/thebrightsidemusiceventvenue-934275 or at the venue itself. Online condolences may be sent to www.tobiasfuneralhome.com

We can't predict these type of losses, so naturally many other shows were already booked for Saturday night. Mick would have wanted everyone to keep playing their music and so we shall! Over at Blind Bob's  you can catch  Nightbeast, Jack O'Shea (guitarist of Bayside from NY), and RINDThis is going to be a rockin' party night that will be fun, fun, fun!
