I was recently asked why I moved back from Florida, many years ago, when I decided to venture away from Dayton for a short time. The diversity of music was one of the main reasons for coming home.
This weekend is a prime example of that diversity: you can start off the weekend by seeing one of Mozart's most famous but rarely performed operas, rock out to alternative legends like Kelley Deal and Mike Montgomery, wheel around the next day and see Celtic rock stars Scythian, and top the night off with a roots rock band from Chicago!
There is so much to see and do this weekend, and it's going to be unseasonably warm - so please support your local original musicians!
Friday February 17th
Alternative rock fans have a couple "don't miss" events themselves, which includes Friday night's show at Blind Bob's, featuring Andy Gabbard with Grape Wizzard, Andy Smith, and R. Ring. The latter band includes Dayton legend Kelley Deal, which is always fun! Lots of excitement brewing for this one - so get there early! Show 10pm. $5 cover. 21+
Down the street at Trolley Stop, catch The Pullouts EP Release Party for their newest release"Knights of the Morning After." This band is excellent for a variety of audiences, with their piano-led originals that mix pop, blues and rock influences. Enjoy! Show 9:30pm. $5 cover. 21+
Looking for a good ole time? Check out The Charlie Tipton Band & Friends at Oregon Express. Charlie is a local singer and musician, who you may remember as one of the soulful singers in the Such a Night: Last Waltz tribute show. This will be a fun time for sure! 9:30pm. $5 cover. 21+
Up north, catch another album release show at Oscar's Bar in Vandalia. Winchester Grey's long anticipated album will be available for the first time, plus see them live! If you're a fan of The Lumineers or The Civil Wars, check this band out. Adding to the fun and excitement are two other awesome area bands, Zane and the Sway and Salvadore Ross. 9pm show. $5 cover.
If you're west of town, make the drive over to see Cincinnati's Wild Mountain Berries at Taffy's of Eaton. This dynamic two-piece blends of Americana, Blues, Jazz, Country, and a touch of Gypsy! Performing 8-11pm.
Saturday February 18th
Celtic music fan alert! Scythian, who regularly headlines at Dayton's Celtic Fest and always crushes it, is back in town performing at the Victoria Theatre. Sons O'Blarney are also on the bill. Tickets start at $25. Show starts at 8pm. For tickets: 937-228-3630 or www.ticketcenterstage.com

Awesome benefit show downtown at Blind Bob's, to benefit Abolition Ohio, whose mission is to stir society’s conscience to action against all forms of trafficking and slavery. After Ashton Kutcher's stirring testimony this week, I think that is something we can all agree on! Plus there is simply fantastic live music by: The Sloanes, Tino, and The Nightbeast. Show starts at 9pm. $5 cover. 21+
Dayton musicians encourage you to be part of the change you want to see! I concur! The "Be the Ripple" show is a great way to do just that, and show your support for the people of Flint, Michigan. Proceeds will go to United way of Genesee County. Live performances feature Soul River Symphony, Zak & What Army, Gin-Soaked Angels, and Brian Clash. All this fun and good vibes happening at Jimmie's Ladder 11. 9pm. $5 cover.
Across the neighborhood, you can catch Radar and 53rd & 3rd (Ramones Tribute) at South Park Tavern. For Ramones fans, this has got to be on your to-do list this weekend! Have fun! Show starts at 9:30pm.
The Lucky Dutch have come all the way from Chicago to perform at Trolley Stop on Saturday night. They are a guitar driven roots rock band, that's worth checking out for sure! 9:30pm. $5 cover. 21+
Reggae fans in Yellow Springs, brace yourselves! Rockstead and Elementree Livity Project are in town and rockin' out Peach's Saturday night. Jazz fans - don't forget about the live jazz every single night of the week at Blue Note Bistro & Lounge in Miamisburg! Beautiful setting and great music. Perfect date night whenever you are feeling the mood.
As always, thank you for supporting live music!
