Dayton Music Insider: Summer's Last Hurrah!

It's hard to believe, but next week marks the first day of autumn. So you know what that means? If you want to squeeze the last bit of fun out of your summah - you better get it on this weekend!

There is lots of great live music to get into - from Hispanic Heritage, to Bluegrass, to epic Rock'n'Roll reunion shows, to a Rock the Bike Music Fest - there is something for everyone! Keep reading to get all the details!

Thursday September 14th

Dan + Shay

Rising country star Casey Donahew  is making a visit to  Oddbody's Music Room Thursday evening. He's a fine-looking Texan who's been topping the charts the last 10 years. Special guest  Christopher Salyer gets the party started. Tickets are $15 advance. $20 day of show. 7pm Doors. 7:30pm Show. 18+

Fraze Pavilion is wrapping up their summer season in patriotic style with country stars Dan + Shay headlining the second Wright-Patt Appreciation Night. This special night honors our local Airmen with music, fun, and celebration. S$20 admission. (Limited availability)

It's another Showcase Thursday at the Yellow Cab Tavern, which features local singer / songwriters. This week features Ludlow, Dennis McCurdy, Sharon Lane and Dennis Rotterman! Free admission! Music from 8-11pm.

Also downtown, you can experience the new Jazz Night at Hannah's  on Ludlow (near Arts Garage). Every Thursday from 8:30 to 11pm, The Next One Up hosts a jazz session, while the bar serves up tasty drinks and Chesapeake Bay oysters! Sounds divine!

Friday September 15th

Festival season continues into this weekend with  Fancy Fest , a celebration of Nancy Brewer (aka Fancy Nancy), who passed two years ago. As an avid supporter of the Dayton Music scene, Nancy brought a smile and hug to every event she attended. Organizers hope that this Festival will not only honor her memory but allow others the chance to share in her passions.

The 2-day lineup includes: Rich Reuter, Controversy for Breakfast, Country Provisions Band, Sharon Lane, Arrows of Neon, Salvadore Ross, Great Northern String Band, Eyeris Wide, Lord Kimbo, along with a singer/songwriter showcase! Vendors, visual artists, and food will also be on hand.

There are additional river activities available, such as fishing, canoeing, kayaking. Tickets for Saturday: Age 0-12 Free, w adult ticket purchase, 13-17 $10 with adult ticket purchase, 18+ $25 ticket. NOTE: Parking is VERY limited so please ride with a friend!


Another 2 day festival that kicks off on Friday is up north at the Rock the Bike Music Festival, which takes place in the heart of historic downtown Troy. Free admission and fun for the whole family! Live music schedule as follows: (additional entertainment opportunities also in store too!)

Late night, there's lots of fun in the Oregon District. At the  Trolley Stop, check out Baoku, performing all original, tribal, worldbeat, African Roots music that will keep you dancing all night! Music starts at 9:30pm with a $5 admission. 21+

The Grove , a popular Cincy rock band, is returning to the Gem City with an awesome lineup of local Dayton Music: The Roof Dogs, Toaster Bath and Manray. Join in the fun at  Jimmie's Ladder 11 on Friday night. 9pm. $5 cover. 21+


Saturday September 16th


It's time for the annual  Hispanic Heritage Festival, which includes all day live music and cultural entertainment. The parade kicks off at noon, and the party keeps going till 11pm at Riverscape Metro Park. Always a fun time! Enjoy!


The Miami Valley Bluegrass Heritage Festival  is back for a 3rd year. Now a FREE concert full of stellar Bluegrass performances by Hall of Fame, and Grammy award-winning artists. Come on down for the fun at Riverfront park Downtown historic Miamisburg on Saturday Sept, 16th from 12pm- 11:30pm. Along with live music, there is cornhole, vendors, kids activities and more!

The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance kicks off their 2017-2018 "The Great Ones" season with a thunderous roar when all three forces of the DPAA combine for Giuseppe Verdi's  Requiem,  the most theatrical requiem ever composed! This is one of the DPAA's signature events, so be sure to get your seat to witness the Philharmonic, Opera and Ballet in one stunning performance. Tickets start at $28. Performance starts at 8pm at the Schuster Center. There is an additional performance at 3pm on Sunday September 17th.

Saturday night, Dayton area hard rock fans are stoked for the epic  Workhorse reunion show at Oddbody's Music RoomLocal bands  Legbone, Idiedtrying, Neon Warship, and Menace 2 Sobreity are rounding out this ragin' night of rock'n'roll! If you're a metal, punk fan - this is a "don't miss" event! $10 admission. Doors 7pm. Show 7:30pm. 18+

The GemFest 2017 Summer Series continues at the Oregon Express with Wolfgang Emmons, Kyleen Downes Band, Typical Johnsons and Evil Eye Gypsy. This event benefits SICSA Pet Adoption Center! Just $5 at the door, with the music kicking off at 9:30 pm. 21+


A super fun night is in store at  South Park Tavern, with the WWAST fundraiser. Music kicks off early at 6:00pm with Tim Gebard & The Hit Men playing a mix of Americana originals and classics. Rite of Venus takes the stage at 9:00 and brings the goods til midnight. No cover! 21+ after 9:00pm.

It's a night of dark night of music at Blind Bob's with Well of Night, Howling Giant (Nashville), and Ex Luna ut Terra. Even the names alone get me in the fall spirit! Doors 9pm. Show 10pm. $5 cover. 21+

On that same trend, hard core / alt bands  Dark Backward.  Siren Suit  (Cincinnati), and  Forage are performing together at Jimmie's Ladder 11 on Saturday night. $5 | 10PM

In a Blues mood? Catch Doug Hart at the Trolley Stop. 9:30 pm. 21+ $5 cover.

The power-pop legend Rick Springfield is back in town, performing  Rose Music Center on Saturday night. Special guests,  Stranger, round out this nostalgic night of 80's rock. Doors 7pm. Show 8pm. Tickets start at $23.50.

Feeling nostalgic for Prince? Head south of town for the Prince Experience at JD Legends in Franklin, conveniently off 75 South. $10 General Admission.
