Dayton Music Insider Top Pick: Songwriter's Solstice

This weekend brings us the 4th Annual Songwriters' Solstice, a benefit for Foodbank Dayton, and features 18 area songwriters at Ghostlight Coffee. This is a great way to support a worthy cause and hear fantastic original music!

The event runs both Friday December 16th and Saturday the 17th from 6-9pm. This year organizers are only accepting cash donations, which is better for the Foodbank, as they buy in bulk and they can buy the things they really need. Any donation accepted - large or small! The schedule as follows:

Friday December 16th

Lots of birthdays today, including my own Chief Inspiration Officer, Mitch Miley. Happy Birthday to him, and to the musicians celebrating this Friday, which includes OldNews, The Repeating Arms, and friends at South Park Tavern. These bands offer wonderful modern folk / Americana tunes, which are sure to please a wide range of audiences! A great pick option for those still checking out music after the Songwriter's Solstice event wraps up.

Another birthday celebration is happening at Tumbleweed Connection with Miss Lissa's Birthday Bash. She's a soulful singer, with an excellent backing band. For Blues and rock fans, this is fun option for sure! $5 cover. 9:30pm show. 21+

More Blues can be found in the Oregon District with the Noah Wotherspoon Band over at Oregon Express. With the cold week and rough year we've all had, I'd say Blues is definitely appropriately listening! $5 cover. 9:30pm show. 21+

Ready to Rock? Check out the Noise for Toys show at Blind Bob's, featuring FBS, The Frankx, W8sted Potential, and Brain Dead Slobs. Bring a new toy and you get in for $2, if you don't bring a toy, no big deal, but it will cost you $5. All donations go to the Salvation Army's "Angel Tree" program for area children.

Metal fans will not want to miss The Winter Warriors Tour at RockStar Pro Arena, with BattlecrossAllegaeon, and Necromancing the Stone (members of Arsis, Black Dahlia Murder and more). Local bands Lucis AbsentiaThe Ako Vendetta, and Letters To The Blind are also performing. Presales: $13. 6pm - 11pm

Bobaflex, the offspring of the Hatfield & McCoy feud, bring their hard rock originals to Oddbody's Music Room, along with Shallow SideEpiKisTShotgun Surprise, and Blackwater.VIP Meet and Greet Packages are available on the band's VIP site here. Loads of benefit shows this holiday season, including the North Of Nowhere South show at Blind Bob's. Proceeds to go to the Izzy Frederick's Education Fund. 9pm

No automatic alt text available.Indie rock fans will also enjoy Noble Giants from Lexington, performing at Trolley Stop. $5 cover. 9:30pm show. 21+

It will be fun and funky over at Oregon Express with local acts Mainline Funk, Gin-Soaked Angels, and Donnie Rose. $5 cover. 9:30pm show. 21+

Tonight is an additional chance to catch Noah Wootherspoon this weekend, this time with another local Blues man, Doug Hart. Both are playing at Gilly's Jazz, which is quite a treat! 8-11pm.

For my jam band loving friends, head out to see Grateful Dead tribute band Arrows of Neon at One Eyed Jack's. This is free show, so get your boogie on! Show starts at 10pm.

Any Deftones and Tool fans in the area? If so, check out Around the Fur and The Grudge at Courtyard Lounge in Englewood. $5 cover. 9pm. Ages 21+
