Each week when I pull together my rundown of live music, typically the title and intro are last. As I pull together the shows, I try to notice a theme or outstanding show that shines above the rest. This weekend, the women of rock are truly taking the town by storm. From Paige Beller's album release celebrations, to local faves Good English, to Detroit Blues sensation Eliza Neals bringing her amazing voice to town, the women in town are truly giving the boys a run for their money!
Ready for a down-home evening of bluegrass and Americana-inspired music? It's sure to be a barn burner at Canal Public House, as Family Jam Production's welcomes Chicago-based band Old Shoe , and their soulful and energetic folk and bluegrass stylings to the area. The 9th Street Stompers from Chattanooga will be joining them this evening as well. Kicking off the night is The Great Northern String Band, one of the premier Grateful Dead Tributes from the local area. Their acoustic versions of the Dead are simply gorgeous. This is going to be a fantastic show! Doors 7 p.m., show 8 p.m. Ages 18+, $10 cover.
Friday, January 29th
I'm really excited for Paige Beller's Live album release, and she's celebrating in style over at Oregon Express Friday night. A Sides/B Sides will kick off the night, with The Pullouts closing the evening with tunes off their own upcoming album. In between will be a 3-way songwriters round featuring Wheatley Matthews, Paige Beller and Mark McMillon. Wow! Now that is a line-up! Doors 8 p.m. Music 9 p.m. $5 cover.

Arrows of Neon , a fabulously talented Grateful Dead tribute band, is ending their "micro tour" at Jimmie's Ladder 11 tonight. If you are Dead fan, this is surely going to satisfy your soul. Ages 21+. $5 cover.
Not sure what you're in the mood for? The show featuring Roley Yuma, Automagik, Palaces, Twany Indian & Scarecrow at Blind Bob's is truly all over the map musically. Sounds like a random adventure, which is my favorite thing to do! I'm personally curious to see Automagik live, as I've been into their recorded music. Ages 21+, $5 cover.
Rockabilly faves Cherry Lee & The Hot Rod Hounds will be over at Tumbleweed Connection tonight. Love the band and the bar! Enjoy! 9:30 p.m. show.
Thor Platter is taking a jaunt around Ohio this January, and will be in Dayton tonight at the Trolley Stop. Great singer/songwriter with a beautiful full sound. A wonderful choice for folk, Americana, and even bluegrass fans in the area. I really think you'll be delighted with this show. 9:30 p.m.
One of the top emerging Blues singers is Eliza Neals , and you can see her perform locally at Taffy's of Eaton. American Blues Scene recently described her: "She sings with the power of Beth Hart, the emotion of Janis Joplin, yet the voice is still her own… Neals blends rock and blues seamlessly." She'll be performing from 8-11 p.m. This is a don't-miss show!
East of town, you can catch the popular jam band Yosemight at Peach's Grill. The Yellow Springs crowd will absolutely love this band, so if you are a local, do yourself a favor and get to this free show! I promise you will not be disappointed. No cover = no excuses!
Saturday, January 30th
The earliest show of the evening is the 2nd Annual Restock Benefit , which is a live music showcase and a charity event to help restock the local food bank after the holiday season. Last year's inaugural event raised 1500 lbs of food and $850 cash. Organizers are hoping to double those efforts with your help! Your $1 = 4 meals when donated to the Foodbank Dayton - wow!
This year's event features a much broader selection of music as well as a broader purpose to not only raise food and money for Foodbank Dayton, but to also have a donation center for clothing (especially winter gear and ready-to-eat meals) for Helping the Homeless Dayton Ohio Making A Difference.
The Music of The Who will be celebrated in grand fashion at The Schuster Center Saturday night. The Dayton Philharmonic is presenting one of their ever popular Rockin' Orchestra performances, and as we all know, nothing is more rockin' than The Who, right? Windborne Music, a world touring multi-band tribute group, will be joining the Orchestra for one spectacular evening. Tickets are $29-$81 depending on seating. Show starts at 8 p.m.
For all you Celtic music fans in the area, Dulahan is performing at Gilly's Saturday evening for just a $5 cover, which will be donated to the Fisher Nightingale House. The FNH supports military families while loved ones are going through medical treatments, which is a very worthy charity to support. Show starts at 8 p.m.
Guitar virtuosos Jeff Powers and Jose Alvarez are back at Trolley Stop tonight. Perfect for a bluesy kind of night. Sometimes that's all I really want, great guitarists playing the Blues. They've got some fun up-beat tunes too, so don't be afraid to dance! 9:30 p.m.
Love Alive , from Columbus, is performing at Jimmie's Ladder 11 with special local guest Funny Business. Love Alive is known for their high energy live performances, psychedelic guitar tones, and funky rhythm section. Both bands are new on my radar, so let me know how the show is! 10 p.m.
Hardcore metal fans, check out The Metal Invasion show featuring Floodwalker, Flesh Warfare, Valdrin, and Coelacanth at Canal Public House. It will be loud and thrashing so get that aggression out! 8 p.m. $5 cover.
The ladies are really shaking up the suburbs this evening! Love it. Up north, Paige and the Bel Airs are performing a full set at Square Roots Records in downtown Troy. Paige is a beloved local musician, and for good reason, she's uber talented! Getting the night started is Chloe Hostetler. Gorgeous music perfect for the listening room vibe in this wonderful new venue.
If you're west of town, or not afraid of a little drive out to Eaton, please check out Moriah Haven's Artist Showcase at Taffy's of Eaton. Moriah herself is worth checking out. She gives me a Tori Amos / Alison Kraus vibe, and is really quite talented. She's featuring four additional up-and-coming artists this evening, including Miranda Louise Pennington, Joshua Mack, Mark Joshua and Cody Stewart. Music from 8 p.m.-12 a.m.
Another lead female, Erica Blinn , will be rockin' out at Peach's Grill in Yellow Springs. Blinn is in town from Nashville on a mini tour. For Dayton folks, don't worry, she'll be back in town on Feb. 12th at the Trolley Stop, so you'll get a chance to see her then! She's been compared to Sheryl Crow, so if that's a brand of music you love, make sure to check her out!
I have to do a shout out to my friends that are performing in Covington, KY this evening. Not in Dayton, but absolutely filled with Dayton musicians and Dayton love is PhatRob's 13th Annual 21st Birthday Party . This year's event features the reunion of beloved local jam band The Maji, and is performed in memory of Norman Dimitrouleas, who was a member of the original group. Ernie Johnson from Detroit and Glostik Willy will also be performing at this event, so you know it's going to be a party! Get to Madison Theatre for this special event. Ages 18+, cost is $15 at the door. Doors 7 p.m., music at 8 p.m.
As always, thank you for supporting live music!
