From Mad Men to Manray

As I peruse through the next week of live music in Dayton, every scene and sub-genre has got to be psyched for at least one show, if not several. The mix of original bands performing around town ranges from hip-hop to country, from the music of Mad Men to the Manray EP Release Party. Everyone is covered, plus this weekend is going to be unseasonably warm, so it's the perfect time to get out of the house and support your local live music scene!

Thursday, Feb. 18

Also downtown for some bootleg Friday fun is the pop/funk/R&B fusion group Freakquency, who will be lighting up Therapy Cafe this evening. I first got to know lead singer Sayyid Jones with his former group Hazy & The Rugged Child, and really loved his energy and soul. Very excited for this relatively new project, so please show them some love. Best part? No cover! And Therapy knows how to make a proper cocktail, so get on it. 10 p.m. - 1 a.m.

Friday, Feb. 19

Missing Don Draper? Me too! Dayton is helping with those Mad Men withdrawals with this weekend's Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra performance of Music of the Mad Men Era. Who doesn't love that iconic theme song? Get well-heeled and head over to the Schuster Center for the 8 p.m. concert. Tickets start at just $27, and there are student and military discounts available. Please note: There is also a performance on Saturday evening as well!

NOTE: The Zygotes' album "82" will be available in the form of limited edition CDs sponsored by Courier Records, along with new T-Shirts and stickers. Manray will be selling cassette tapes of their new EP provided by Gas Daddy Go.

The lovely and talented Miss Angela Perley will be taking the stage with her Howlin' Moons over at the Trolley Stop Friday evening. Punk rock and metal kids, make sure you check out Grand Mammoth, Duderus, The Involuntarys, and the Gay Black Republican at Blind Bob's tonight. The latter two bands are from Indianapolis, so it's going to be a Dayton v Indy night. May the best bands win! Doors 9pm. Show 10pm. $5

A new band on my radar, The California Red, is coming up from Cincinnati to play at Jimmie's Ladder 11. They are part hard rock, and slightly psychedelic, with strong lead vocals. Think Black Sabbath. Check it out and let me know what you all think. 9 p.m.

Nick Johnson, a great Americana style singer-songwriter, also from Cincy, will be in town at South Park Tavern this evening. A laid back show in a cozy neighborhood spot sounds sort of perfect, right? Show at 10 p.m.

Celtic fans will love the Slainte Reunion Show at Dublin Pub this evening. Listening to a truly authentic Celtic group, with fans across the world, is the perfect way to prep for St Patrick's Day celebrations! 8 p.m.

Another one is with punk rock bands The Frankx, Dip Spit, and Dead Tuth at Oregon Express. Dead Tuth are newbies, so please stop in early to check out these fresh faces in the Dayton music scene. Show at 10pm.

An interesting night of haunting and hard rock indie tunes from regional bands Noble Giants (Lexington), The Easthills (Indiana), Colossal Brother can be found at Blind Bob's tonight. I like the more experimental nights at Bob's, so please, enjoy!

Grateful Dead fans in the area have two opportunities to see tribute bands honoring the 50-year old beloved rock group.
