This blog is for all the fans of live music, from the casual listener to the weekend warrior, so they can easily find great music in Dayton area.

Get ready for rock'n'roll romance this weekend

Dayton, Ohio was recently ranked one of the top 20 most romantic cities in the U.S. by Surprising? Well, when you have a dynamic music scene and a low cost of living, that makes for a lot of fun, cheap dates!

Ready to take your love on the town, or look for love this weekend? There's tons to do, and a lot of low entrance fees and even free shows, so it certainly doesn't have to be an expensive night out.

My favorite free show this weekend is Subterranean's Saint Valentine's Day Funky Massacre. In addition to the amazing live improv/funk music, there will be free toasts, snacks, and swag. Each person will be given a raffle ticket at the door for local summer festivals too! How fantastic is that?! If you haven't experienced SubT, this is certainly the night to rectify that!

Local rockabilly favorites Cherry Lee & The Hotrod Hounds are throwing it down at Blind Bob's, with special guest Bones Jugs from Illinois. A great band to get your lady dancing! 9:30 p.m., $5 cover.

Don't have a sweetie this weekend? Get your blues on with the Doug Hart Band at Tumbleweed. 9:30 p.m., $5 cover (which gets you a wristband that you can typically use at other bars in the Oregon District -- ask the door guy for details).

Funksters Daisy Matrix Trio will be at Oregon Express Friday night. They are a new band on my radar, so I'd love to hear how the show is! Tweet me @LibbyBallengee.

One of the best deals for metal fans in the area is the awesome $5 show at Oddbody's tonight. Gears are braving the cold from their hometown of Miami FL, along with special guests 80 Proof, Mothers Onion Band, and Shotgun Surprise. What a steal for $5!! Doors at 7 p.m., show at 8 p.m.

Canal Public House also has a hard rock night planned with a wide variety of local head bangin' acts including CommunicationsVibrant TroubadoursScarecrow Sideshow, and Lot Lizard. Ages 18+ w/valid ID. Doors at 8:30 p.m. Show at 9:30 p.m. $7

One of my favorite local singers Scott Lee will perform with special guest Cory Lambert at Oscar's in Vandalia. If you dig folk and Americana style music, this is well worth the short jaunt up 75.

Getting further out in the burbs you'll find a "Red Hot Riot" at The Courtyard Lounge in Englewood. This hard rock venue is featuring The Pullouts (of Ohio)Far From Eden and TheGringo. Doors at 9 p.m. $5 cover. Ages 21+.

Across town in Yellow Springs, the local Blues band Grampy Bone is performing at Peach's Grill. To be clear, this is not a Valentine's show. It's an Abraham Lincoln Birthday Bash. What a hoot!

For my friends out Preble County way, check out a night of singer/songwriters at Taffy's of Eaton. This is a free show! Starts at 8 p.m. with Brentney Campbell (Indiana), followed by Justin Daniels (Tennessee), and then Richard Strater (South Carolina).

My Valentine's Day weekend culminates with the highly anticipated show at  Jimmie's Ladder 11: Subterranean's Saint Valentine's Funky Massacre. This is a free show for the fans, to their appreciation and love of Dayton's musical community! Subterranean is simply one of the most talented groups around, and you will not want to miss this special show.

For the indie and progressive rock crowd, check out Human Cannonball, Frontier Folk Nebraska, and Salvador Ross at Blind Bob's. These are really great bands, and although Bob's has a lot going on every weekend, this is one that you'll want to see. I have a bit of a rock'n'roll crush on Salvador Ross, so make sure you get there early! 0 p.m., $5 cover.

Man, it's just one of those nights where there is great music at every turn. The Almighty Get Down is getting funky over at Canal Public House. Very special guests Grover and Gin-Soaked Angels will kick off the night. Enjoy my friends! $6 cover.

Dayton favorites Puzzle of Light, featuring the Bashaws, are playing at Trolley Stop. That's always a very enjoyable night of music, especially in the cozy Trolley Stop setting.

If that's the light side, the dark side is at the other end of the Oregon District. Hardcore band Dark Backward, along with Patsy and Mike Sloan, will be at Oregon Express. This is Dark Backward's first show of 2016, performing songs from the new EP "Tension/Release."

Quick note for those of you who held out on Here Comes the Mummies tickets: that show is sold out at Oddbody's! For everyone who snagged one, have one hell of a great time!

Heading out of the Dayton area, Grateful Dead fans should not miss the Great Northern String Band at One Eyed Jack's in Fairborn. They perform acoustic versions of your favorite Dead tunes. No cover, drink specials, and a lot of fun will be had!

Out in Yellow Springs, check out indie/alternative rockers Bucko and Speaking Suns at Peach's Grill this evening. Bucko is a bit New Wave, and has a great driving beat. Both bands are super interesting, so if you're looking for something different, give them a listen.

Taffy's of Eaton is really bringing in the big hitters from Nashville. Tonight they've got Jas Patrick, a rock/soul/Americana sensation that is truly worth the drive to Eaton. Check out his music, you'll see what I mean! Good stuff.

Metal fans, if you are south of town, stop by the St Valentine's Day Metal Massacre at the Old Crow Bar in Middletown. Shadow KasketSecret Circle SocietyFighting the World, and Papa Squat are on the bill. Ages 18-20: $8. Ages 21+: $5.

Celebrating Valentine's Day? Check out Calliope Musicals, in town all the way from Austin! They are bringing their psychedelic party to Canal Public House. This is a full audio visual experience, so be prepared to party down! Doors at 7 p.m., show 8 p.m. Ages 18+, cost $5.

Also getting the Sunday night rockin' is Maharaja, Archarus (Indiana), Horseburner (WV), and Enkiridian, who are all performing over at Blind Bob's. This one will be a loud one, folks!

As always, thank you for supporting the Dayton music scene!
