How much do we all love having a long weekend mid-summer? If you are in town, there are some cool shows shakin' loose this Independence Day weekend:
Friday July 3rd
If you are in the Oregon District around 7:30pm, look for The Gathering Collective , and join in! As most of you know, I presented my first concert this past Wednesday. One of the biggest hits of the evening was during the set break, when a drum and music circle erupted in front of the stage, courtesy of Adam Elfers and his group, The Gathering. They will be around all weekend, so I hope you catch them. Their spirit and energy are contagious! The exact location is TBD, which is part of the fun! They will also be parading through the OD on Saturday at 10:30am too!
A great line up of indie rock bands are scheduled at Blind Bob's, including Speaking Suns, Coconut Milk, New Moons, and Smug Brothers. If you're a Speaking Suns fan, this weekend is going to be the last to see them for a few months, while they work on writing new music. Smug Brothers is another Dayton favorite that you don't want to miss! The other two bands are coming up from Cincinnati, and promises to round out an eclectic mix of sounds. Music starts at 9pm.

At the other end of the Oregon District, you'll find Angela Perley & the Howlin' Moons, a popular up-and-coming rock band from Columbus performing at Trolley Stop . Cool Cleveland describes their sound as "Fierce roots rock that shakes up blues and classic rock with a dollop of punk spirit." Can't wait to check it out!
Outside the immediate downtown area? There are some options for you as well! Springboro is kicking off a weekend of public Bicentennial celebrations, starting early on Friday: at 3pm the Fries Band, a classic rock band takes the stage at North Park. They are followed by Hotel California, an Eagles tribute band. The rest of the evening is full of bag pipe and drum cores, special military tributes, and fireworks. This is a free event. Check the city's site for information on parking, and click here for more reasons to go to this celebration!
Ready to really rock out? Shoot over to JD Legends in Franklin for hard rock original band Shotgun Surprise . They are used to throwing parties, so get ready for a good time. If you are in more of a funky/dance vibe, try out Ohio Brass and Electric at Peach's Grill in Yellow Springs. I don't often recommend cover bands, but I have a friend that just joined this band, and looks like an easy-going fun time! And there is no cover at the door.
Last, but certainly not least, I would like to remind you that this is the weekend for Willy Fest, a music and arts gathering taking place at Hannon's Camp America , outside of Oxford Ohio. Glostik Willy, a popular hard-edged jam band, has decided to take their party to the next level and create their own festival. This inaugural 2 day festival is hosted by none other than The Trailer Park Boys ! What a hoot! Music starts at 3pm Friday and goes through the late night Saturday night, and includes 20 performers, workshops, and more. Ticket price is $90 at the gate; which, includes: camping, parking, two stages, a cheeseburger picnic and a weekend full of music and fun. Note: Only cash is accepted at the gate.
Saturday July 4th
Springboro continues it's celebration with music during the day! This is great for parents who want to get out and see live music, but have options for the kiddos too. Some highlights: 11:30am Willow Creek Blue Grass Band . 12:55 One , a U2 tribute band. 4:45pm Ashley Martin Band, an local original country group. 8:30pm Arrival, a Journey tribute band.
Some super special music is going down at Blind Bob's this evening. Tip of the hat to Brandon Hawk, who excels at booking a breadth and variety of acts to Bob's. The featured act is Timbre, a neo-classical three piece from Nashville. With harp, cello and percussion, this group creates dreamscapes with their music. Cool stuff! The evening also includes: Narrow/Arrow, Sea Cycles , and Lo the Loyal Conscripts. Show starts at 8pm.
Sunday July 5th
If you didn't get to catch, Angela Perley and the Howlin' Moons at Trolley Friday night, they are doing an early 12:40pm set at Springboro's celebration . They are followed by Richard Lynch Band , a country band, and the city's favorite cover band, The Menus , from 5-8pm.
Not quite ready for the weekend to end? Blind Bob's is again the spot. Garage rock band, The California Red , is celebrating their EP release, along with Charter House and Charlie Tipton . Music starts at 9pm.
Wednesday July 8th
Please do yourself a favor and check out Mipso at Oddbody's Music Room, next Wednesday evening, along with opener Mark Cantwil . These guys are so talented! This group from North Carolina is stopping in Dayton to play their self-described "renegade traditional music." Fans of folk, bluegrass, traditional, Americana, and country styles will have a wonderful evening at this show. Pre-sales are $7, and $10 at the door. Doors and music start at 7pm.
