Libby's music pick of the weekend: Roktoberfest

Nothing quite goes together like beer and bands, and one of the best times to celebrate that combination is October, referred to as Roktoberfest by our friends down in Franklin. Read on to find out about that event, and many more excellent events happening this weekend!

Friday, September 30

The Dayton Philharmonic kicks off their Masterworks series with Scheherazade, featuring works by Mozart (Symphony No 1), Rachmaninoff (Theme of Paganini), and Rimsky-Korsakov (1888's orchestra suite with Arabian influence). Anastasia Rizikov is the special guest artist on piano, and our world class DPO conductor, Neal Gittleman. Performances are at 8 p.m. on Friday Sept. 30 and Sat. Oct. 1 this weekend. Tickets are super-affordable, ranging from $8-$64.

One of the most highly anticipated rock shows of the weekend is Me & Mountain's album release party at Jimmie's Ladder 11 for their newest release, "GOLD." Special guests Gay Sharks (PJ and Tommy of The Motel Beds) and Andy Gabbard (Buffalo Killers) are kicking off the evening. I believe it's a $5 cover. 9 p.m. Ages 21+.

Great shows are also happening down in the Oregon District, of course. I'd highly recommend checking out Trey Stone and the Ringers at Trolley Stop. They really liven up any evening, with their piano and guitar driven original music. If you're not in a good mood, you'll be in one after! $5 cover. 9:30 p.m. Ages 21+.

Indie rockers Forage, Soul Low, Noble Giants, Lunar Lounge are all performing together at Blind Bob's for an experimental rock evening. $5 cover. 9 p.m. Ages 21+.

At Cloverdale (formerly Vex) is presenting a mashup of different styles of music for one fun night, featuring KaŸel, Kris Dunivan (Dunzilla) and Twany Indian. Show is from 10 p.m.-1 a.m. I believe there is the typical $5 cover here.

A female-led evening of original music with Kyleen Downes and Elenore and the Elephant can be enjoyed out in Yellow Springs at Peach's Grill. These groups are definitely worth checking out, so please show them love. It's a free show, so no excuses! Music is starting at 10 p.m. Ages 18+ with ID.

For the hard rockers out there, Saturday night is your night! The uber-popular metal group Mushroomhead is performing at Oddbody's, along with Sunflower Dead, Unsaid Fate, Raven Black, and Death Division. The night kicks off early to fit all the music in. Doors at 5 p.m., show at 5:30 p.m. Tickets: $25 advance, $30 day of show. Ages 18+.

Downtown, check out the long-running hip hop party Gem City Get Down at Blind Bob's. Trunk Bound Regime DJs will be playing Funk & Hip Hop, and MC Picket Fence is emceeing to keep the party rolling. All proceeds go to the Azheimer's Association. Just $3 at the door. Ages 21 & up with ID. 9 p.m.

Party people will get the Halloween celebrations started early at Cloverdale. Robert Parkey of RP3 Photoworks will have his Halloween pinup series on display while Cherry Lee & the Hot Rod Hounds and The Skeletones perform live. $5 cover. 10 p.m.-2:30 a.m. show. Ages 18+.

Austin-based folk performer Michael Fracasso makes a stop at Gilly's for a night of music in support of his new album, "Here Come the Savages." Singer/songwriter John Dubuc starts off the evening. 8-11 p.m.

In Miamisburg, you can experience a very unique event to celebrate Halloween at The Mosaic Institute of Greater Dayton. Enjoy music by OldNews and special guest band Salvadore Ross, dance from Hexa Burlesque, and gruesome art work from a mix of visual artists. Plus a costume party! Doors at 7 p.m. Show runs til 12 a.m. $10 cover. BYOB.

Last but not least, rock / blues band Spanish Tony Sanchez is at Peach's in Yellow Springs this evening. Great people in this group, who bring great energy to the stage! No cover show. Music is starting at 10 p.m. Ages 18+ with ID.

As always, thank you for supporting live music!
