What you need to know about Paul L. Dunbar events Saturday

Dayton will celebrate the birth of one of its favorite sons this weekend.

Wright Dunbar, Inc. and the Dayton Aviation Heritage National History Park will host family-friendly events from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, honoring Paul L. Dunbar.

We shared "Sympathy," one of  Dunbar's favorite poems, on Feb. 9, the anniversary of his death.

West Third Street will be closed between Broadway and Shannon street  1 p.m. to 5 p.m. for Saturday's  birthday event.

Parking will be available in the lot behind the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center at 16 S. Williams St., the lots between Edison and Second Street just east of the Paul Laurence Dunbar House and on the street in the neighborhood surrounding the Wright- Dunbar Business District.

Here are the events:

 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. —  "Walk the Walk," a showcase of Dayton's Walk of Fame inductees and historians at the memorial stones on West Third Street in the Wright Dunbar Historic Business District.

 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. — poetry readings in the first floor theater of the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center.

Speakers will include  Herbart Martin, University of Dayton professor emeritus; storyteller and poet Mitch Capel and Dr. Joy Kinard, superintendent of the Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument.

2 p.m.  — Guinness Book of World Records attempt to break the record for reading a poem with the largest group. The group will read  Paul Laurence Dunbar’s “Compensation" in the plaza outside of the Interpretive Center.  Birthday cake will be served.

During the day  t he National Park Service will  show short videos of Walk of Fame inductees from Wright Dunbar, Inc.’s library in the i n the Interpretive Center. 

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — the Paul Laurence Dunbar House at 219 N. Paul Laurence Dunbar St. will be free and open to the public for tours.
