Former Kettering Elder-Beerman getting new life

The former Elder-Beerman store in Kettering is getting new life.

Officials with Big Lots erected a sign on the former big box store at 2050 E. Dorothy Lane in the past week.

Details on when the store is going to open is not available or what the future of a nearby store on Wilmington Pike. The company has been hiring for a manager at the store.

Big Lots, which is headquartered in Columbus, has over 1,400 stores in 47 states. The company has 97 stores in Ohio, including several in the Dayton area.

The Elder-Beerman location closed in 2018 at the Kettering Towne Center. The store’s parent company, Bon-Ton filed for bankruptcy in 2018 and closed all of its locations in the U.S.

Dayton-based Elder-Beerman has roots in the area back to 1883 when an advertisement for the Boston Dry Goods Store owned by Thomas Elder ran in the Dayton Daily Journal.
