More than parents can save money tax-free weekend: Here’s how

Area bargain hunters don’t have to be sending kids back to school to find deals during the tax-free holiday this weekend.

All school supplies and instructional materials less than $20 and clothing less than $75 are tax free this weekend as part of an Ohio permanent sales tax holiday. But it’s not just for parents.

Here’s how you can benefit even without school-aged children:

1. Bargain hunters

Need new work clothes? Baby clothes? Running shoes? Pens to sign your checks?

Tax-free apparel doesn’t just apply to back-to-school clothes. All Ohio stores that offer merchandise that qualifies will participate in the holiday, including small businesses, shopping malls, off-price stores and big-box department stores.

In addition to shirts, pants, socks and other common clothing items, shoppers can get shoe insoles, slippers, steel-toed shoes, rainwear, gloves, hats, belts, suspenders, neckties, scarves, aprons, bathing suits and costumes.

Any clothing that costs less than $75, including adult apparel, shoes, socks, baby clothes and other apparel needs.

School supplies like notebooks, pens, pencils and sticky notes will also be tax-free for home organization or other general use.

2. New parents and care providers

A big win for new parents and care providers for elderly relatives or friends, both baby and adult diapers are tax-free this weekend.

Baby receiving blankets are also included in the qualifying items.

3. Brides

It may be hard to find a wedding dress that costs less than $75, but brides may have some luck with other wedding needs. The tax-free apparel list includes formal wear, formal shoes, coats, hosiery and garters.

Belts, suspenders and neckties are also tax free if under $75 for the groom and groomsmen.
