JUST IN: Century Bar scores yet ANOTHER national shout-out for its bourbon-bar excellence

The national shout-outs just continue to pour in for one of downtown Dayton’s favorite watering holes.

For the sixth — yes, SIXTH —consecutive year, The Century Bar at 10 S. Jefferson St. has been named one of America’s 100 Best Bourbon Bars by The Bourbon Review’s website. The authors expanded the list from 80 last year to 100 this year, and The Century Bar was one of 21 bars in the Midwest region to make the list. (About half of the Midwest’s best bourbon bars were located in Chicago, by the way.)

“We have identified 100 bars who take their Bourbon obsession to another level,” the web site said. “There are a lot of smart, well-stocked Bourbon bars out there in 2018, but while your favorite watering hole may have a decent selection, some go far above and beyond expectations.”

“It takes a lot to be named one of America’s 100 Best Bourbon Bars, but they’re easy to spot: seemingly endless shelves that are lined of bottles both rare and common, stretching off into the horizon. They feature multiple cocktails that show off Bourbon’s wide range of flavors, and they take pride in educating their patrons about the basics of brown water.”

This  year’s list didn’t detail the attributes of each bar that made the list, but last year, here was how the Century was described:

No TV’s. No jukebox. Just 115 Bourbons and over 300 whiskies total to choose from while you listen to music from the 1930’s. The home of the former Kette & Sons Rye Whiskey Distillery, Century Bar also regularly holds blind tastings.

The Century dates back to 1942 under that name and that location. The location’s history as a bar dates back even before then.

The continuing recognition from Bourbon Review is not the only national acclaim that has been heaped upon the Century. In February 2015, Men’s Journal magazine’s website declared The Century one of the “10 Best Bourbon Bars in America,” describing it as “a small bar with a huge bourbon list, The Century is as devoted to the whiskey as any other place in America.”
