Jill Scott, Dave Chappelle give props to Dayton funk

Dayton funk got major props during the final night of Dave Chappelle’s epic Juke Joint inside a Yellow Springs farm’s barn.

Not only did Chappelle give props to Dayton funk legend Roger Troutman and his family band Zapp, but Dayton resident Millie Smith told us singer Jill Scott belted out Shirley Murdock's 1986 classic "As We Lay" following a medley of songs from Zapp.

Murdock, a Toledo native, was a background singer for Zapp.

Larry Troutman and Ohio Players keyboardist Billy Beck wrote "As We Lay."

Roger Troutman helped Murdock, who recorded at his Dayton record studio, get a record deal with Elektra Records.

Smith said the shout out to Dayton funk was “super dope,” but topped by the tribute to Prince.

Tickets went on sale on Thursday, May 24, 2018, for the  two nights of  Chappelle's Juke Joint featuring DJ D-Nice and musician Fred Yonnet and The Band With No Name.

Both nights of the cellphone-free parties (thus no public videos) sold out within 15 minutes.

Scott commanded the stage both nights.

Besides Scott,  comedians Donnell Rawlings,  Amy Schumer and Hannibal Buress; Jarobi White of A Tribe Called Quest;  rapper Doug E. Fresh and singer Martin Luther McCoy were among the celebrities spotted during the Juke Joints held in a barn on Whitehall Farms in the Tecumseh Land Trust. 
Chappelle had his first Juke Joint in Yellow Springs in 2015. He has since had similar bashes all around the country.
