Eleven high school girls came to compete during the Dayton Dragons National Anthem Tryouts at the Dayton Mall in February, and they all won, together.
The grand-prize winner of the contest, which is presented by the Dayton Daily News, has been selected to open the Dragons’ 20th season. The Miamisburg High School Madrigal Singers will sing at Fifth Third Field on Opening Night on April 4, as the Dayton Dragons host the Bowling Green Hot Rods at 7 p.m.

The Madrigal Singers are a group of 11 girls from grades 10 through 12 that specializes in Renaissance a cappella singing. Lee Ann Kinner, vocal director for the group, said they are an “Elite Auditioned Choir” and perform frequently in the area at private parties, hospitals and other events.
Kinner added that they captured a first-place award at the Music in the Park festival at King’s Island and received a “superior rating” at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) event, the highest rating given. The group performed on approximately 20 Christmas dates in December.
The Dayton Daily News has served as the sponsor for all 20 years of auditions. Auditions are judged by a panel of community leaders including representatives from the Dayton Daily News, according to a Dragons press release.
Tickets can be purchased at the Dragons Box Office next to the main entry gates, online at DaytonDragons.com, by phone at (937) 228-2287 or Ticketmaster charge-by-phone at (937) 228-2323 or in person at any Miami Valley Kroger store that has a Ticketmaster outlet location.
