A pair of Hollywood heavyweights dined at one of the Dayton area’s favorite restaurant last week.
Oakwood Club owner Lance Stewart said he was honored that Robert Redford and Tom Waits ate at his restaurant on Monday, May 1.
“I couldn’t be prouder,” he said. “ I think it says a lot for our staff, the restaurant.”
The Oakwood Club is located at 2414 Fair Hills Ave. in Oakwood.
Redford and Waits were in town last week for the filming of “The Old Man and the Gun” in downtown Dayton. The film also stars Casey Affleck and Danny Glover.
Glover took photos with area residents downtown near Liberty Tower.
The pair were seated by Oakwood Club manager John Minoughan, who said they were great guests.
He received a call from someone from the movie before the actors arrived. He was happy to accommodate them.
“They were perfect gentlemen,” Minoughan said. “They are just regular people who want to come in and have a nice dinner. They wanted to have a nice, peaceful dinner.”
The actors took a few photos with customers, but were otherwise left to enjoy their meals.
Redford ordered the Alaska halibut special and bruschetta. Waits went for the filet mignon.
Minoughan said Redford raved about the fish.
“He loved it. He said it was very good and excellent,” he said.
Stewart said tons of celebrities have eaten at the Oakwood Club in its 55 years. He said Redford is near the top of that list. He has long been a fan of Redford’s work.
“He was always one of our favorite actors,” Stewart said. “ I think everybody likes (him) and what he stands for.”
The actors may return to Dayton for additional filming, Stewart said.
LPGA tournament golfer Nancy Lopez also visited the Oakwood Club this week. She was in town for an AIM (Adventures In Movement) for the Handicapped event.
