Call it a “yee-roh,” call it a “gy-ro,” just don’t pass up a meal at this opa-tastic new restaurant.
The Gyro Room is definitely worth a visit for any Greek food fan.
The laidback, 1,500-square-foot eatery recently opened at 1124 Brown Street near the University of Dayton.
As Mark Fisher reported, the business is owned by John Hanna and is in the building that once housed Tropical Tan.
Tanning beds and supplies have been replaced with cool wooden tables decorated with the Gyro Room logo in white letters. (Take a look below.)
There is also a sense of fun at The Gyro Room. Its friendly and welcoming staff donned white t-shirts to help customers correctly pronounce the food at the heart of the restaurant’s menu: “yee-roh.”
As for the gyros, boy, are they good.
We tried the lamb and beef gyro which came wrapped in fresh pita bread with onions, chopped tomato and an in-house made tzatziki sauce for $7.49.
We made it a platter with Greek rice for an additional $1.99.
There is also a chicken gyro for $7.49, a shrimp gyro for $8.49, and a Philly Gyro for $7.99.
A healthy portion of evenly spiced, tender lamb and beef gyro meat was served in our sandwich.
I munched it down and could have had another because it was just that good. We didn’t drop our forks.
When the opportunity to eat spanakopita pops up, one must eat spanakopita.
Gyro Room’s baked filo dough triangles were stuffed with feta cheese and spinach and did not disappoint.
For spending more than $20, we won a spin on the Gyro Room wheel. We landed on dolmathes — three grape leaves stuffed with rice. They held together nicely and thankfully were not as salty as other dolmathes I have had.
The Gyro Room’s menu also includes:
- Pizzas ($6.99-7.49)
- Falafel (a deep-fried ball, doughnut or patty made from ground chickpeas, fava beans, or both; $6.99)
- Souvlaki (small pieces of meat and sometimes vegetables grilled on a skewer, $7.49)
- Greek Salad ($6.99)
- Homemade baklava (a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of filo filled with chopped nuts and sweetened and held together with syrup or honey, $1.99)
- Rice bowls with chicken or gyro meat topped with tzatziki for $6.99
