“Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,” the classic lyrics from Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song,” will come to life at Dorothy Lane Market.

DLM will roast the nuts, imported from Europe, in front of the three Miami Valley locations on Saturdays this month.

This is the first time DLM has made this holiday classic they learned few people have had an opportunity to try.

Roasting chestnuts conjures nostalgic feelings of the holidays, Michelle Mayhew, produce director for DLM said. “Let’s get people in the Christmas spirit, let’s get them uplifted.”

Mayhew roasted a test batch earlier this week and said the chestnuts gave off a nutty, woody aroma and had a wonderfully sweet taste. “Now I know why people love them.”

The roasted chestnuts will be served in a paper bag, as street vendors sell them in New York City. A half dozen will cost $5 and a dozen will cost $9. Supplies are limited.

Raw chestnuts will also be available to take home and roast for $8.99 a pound. DLM will have recipes available to use the nuts in stuffing, roasted vegetables and other dishes.
