Supporting a good cause

John Drake, the gym’s owner, says proceeds from the show will benefit Hope Lutheran Church at 500 Hickory St. in Dayton’s South Park neighborhood.

The church founded in 1902 needs a new roof.

“We are raising the roof for Hope,” Drake said. “It is a giant church that is struggling to keep its congregation going.”

The exhibition will feature nine bouts. Drake said most of the boxers participated in Knockout Dayton, an annual amateur boxing exhibition held at Memorial Hall since 2012. Knockout Dayton benefits Dayton History.

Boxers have been training three months.

Drake promises a good time.

“We’ll have some rematches of (fights) over the years,” he said.

There will be a beer truck and a food truck.

Drake said more events are in the pipeline.

“It is going to be a really good show. We are excited about it,” Drake said. “This is going to lead to something bigger and better.”
