Local winery’s ‘Dogtoberfest’ will benefit homeless animals

Enjoy a glass of wine, help a homeless animal.

That's the idea behind the 8th Annual Dogtoberfest at Brandeberry Winery, which will be held from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14. The winery is located at 5118 W. Jackson Road, between Yellow Springs and Enon in southern Clark County.

“This year we are raising money for the new Clark County SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), which has stepped up to help Clark County with its tremendous stray and unwanted pet overpopulation since the closing of the Clark County Humane Society,” said Kelly Brandeberry, marketing director for the winery.

“The money raised at Dogtoberfest will go in the Clark County SPCA’s veterinary fund for medical care and for the spay and neutering of stray animals.”

Attendees are invited to bring their well-behaved dogs to the winery that day, Brandeberry said. On that day, the winery will be re-releasing its popular “Luv-a-Bull” wine, a sweet white moscato.

“We originally released this wine last year at Dogtoberfest and sold out all 47 cases in just five hours,” Brandeberry said.

The winery will donate $5 for each bottle of Luv-a-Bull sold during Dogtoberfest, Brandeberry said.

There will also be raffle baskets, a 50/50 raffle, a bake sale, Dogtoberfest hoodies, and a photographer offering pet photos to benefit the Clark County SPCA. And vendors will be selling items “for dogs and people,” Brandeberry said.

Freddie’s Franks and Burgers and Flyby’s BBQ food trucks will serve food at the event, and live music will be provided by Skip Hoyt from 1 to 4 p.m.. There also will be a costume contest for the dogs, with judging and prizes awarded at 3 p.m. A special sampler wine tasting will be available that will include six tastes for $6, in a souvenir wine glass that attendees can take home.

The SPCA will offer pet adoptions at the event as well.

The event raised $8,200 last year for homeless animals, “and we always have a goal to raise more money than the previous year.”

Brandeberry’s father, Jim Brandeberry, is the former dean of the college of engineering at Wright State University who founded the winery with his family following his retirement. During his WSU career, Brandeberry was a home winemaker, winning multiple awards for his competition entries.

In the 2017 Ohio Wine Competition held earlier this year, Brandeberry’s Blackberry wine captured the award for “Top Fruit Wine.”
