Mary’s Plant Farm founder, Mary Harrison, 96, has been growing numerous varieties of plants, flowers and wildflowers since 1945, when she moved to the farm. Once a cornfield, she created the colorful woodland. There are three acres of 70-year-old-gardens and the gardens change every three to four weeks. Harrison still works in the garden every day.

“This is a mini tea that the ladies can bring their moms, or mothers can bring their children, and it’s a nice introduction to tea,” said manager Sherri Berger, who is also Harrison’s daughter.

Guests will learn what lemon curd is or about Devonshire Cream, she said.

“It features scones, tea and the condiments with a dessert. It’s a nice Mother’s Day tea to highlight the weekend,” Berger said.

Teas will be held in the garden, weather permitting. If the weather is bad, the event will be held in the gift shop café area.

“We’ve been doing High Teas for 25 years or more. We were doing High Teas before it really became popular,” Berger said. “During business hours, everyone is welcome to tour Mary’s private gardens.”

Guests come from places as far away as Athens, Ohio, to Kentucky and beyond to experience the teas. Known for their extraordinary and specialty plants, Mary’s Plant Farm and Landscaping has been described as “an unusual nursery and landscaping business.” There are three acres of mature display gardens to tour, along with three more acres of growing fields and a nursery sales area. A few of the featured plant collections include boxwood, daylily, ivy, hosta, hamamelis, magnolia, ferns, roses and more.

Coming in July, guests can also enjoy a “High Tea in the Garden” on Sunday, July 15, and Sunday, July 29, at 2 p.m. and on Thursday, July 19, and Thursday, July 26, at 1:30 p.m. Each afternoon will feature a four-course, High Tea served in the garden. Reservations with a pre-paid $30 fee are required (limited seating.) Guests start making reservations in January, and these teas always sell out.
