PechaKucha Dayton marks 10 years with a celebration of art at 100-year-old Dayton institution

PechaKucha Dayton is combining two celebrations Thursday night — its own 10-year anniversary and the centennial of the Dayton Art Institute.

“Arts and Anniversaries” is the theme for volume 38 of PechaKucha Dayton, which will focus on celebrating the arts in Dayton, said Shayna McConville, a co-organizer of the event.

“The presenters we picked are really exceptional and the topics are interesting including how art works in a community and how art influences life,” McConville said.

Ten speakers chosen for the evening — each displaying 20 images for 20 seconds — will speak on a range of topics including “The DAI, Our Rich History and Our Bright Tomorrow,” “The Scientific Narrative of Leonardo’s Last Supper,” and “Black Heritage Through Visual Rhythms.”

PechaKucha Dayton, which began a decade ago, has grown into a hugely popular community event.

“It’s amazing that we have a huge interest from people who want to speak,” McConville said. “We look for inspiring topics and stories that unite communities through creativity and storytelling.”

McConville believes the event makes a valuable contribution to the community. “It helps to see things that you might not know about. The topics are always meaningful and educational, and it’s a chance to meet new people.”
