Sideshow 13: This weekend’s free art and music festival the biggest yet

Local musicians Ryan Palcic of Thundertaker and Taylor McGuff of McGuff & the Dumpster Fires are staunch supporters of Sideshow, presented at Yellow Cab Tavern in Dayton on Friday and Saturday, May 25 and 26.

Palcic and McGuff, who have both played the festival with their bands, are in charge of the music portion of Sideshow 13. They sat down recently at the Yellow Cab Tavern to discuss their duties for the annual festival, which features work from more than 40 local artists and music from more than 40 area performers.

Palcic: “Both of our bands were able to use Sideshow as a launching pad. We met other bands and got other gigs from it. If you’re a new band and it’s one of your first shows, if you come in here and you’re put in the right spot and you do a good job and you get a good crowd response, it’s easy to get involved out here. It certainly worked for us.”

McGuff: “Just for a show to go see, if you want a sampling of Dayton music, this is it. I can’t think of any other show where you can see this wide a swath of bands and acoustic artists and visual artists and poets as well. I get so excited for Sideshow. It really is my favorite event every year. I have a warm feeling every Sideshow weekend.”

Palcic: “I met so many people through Sideshow 10. That was the first year my band Thundertaker played. We played with Death By Fetish, Evil Eye Gypsy, Dead Tooth and McGuff & the Dumpster Fires. I met Taylor that night. I volunteered that first year and I had such a good time I’ve been doing it ever since.”

McGuff: “We had 110 applications or something like that this year. That’s the most I’ve seen so far, which is a great sign, but we had to cut that down to 42 acts and that made it even more difficult. This is also the first Sideshow we’ve worked where there are less spots than before.”

Palcic: “The hardest thing to do is cut band. “There is so much talent in the city, and we all have different tastes, so you inevitably end up having to make some tough decisions and cut bands you care about.”

Sideshow 13 performers include the New Old-Fashioned, Sharon Lane, Far From Eden, Mandy Jewell, the Repeating Arms and XL427. Exhibiting visual artists include Christine Gaffney, Matthew Reynolds, Tara Moore, Tom Gilliam, Jackie Wagner and Chris Corn.
