Slow and steady, Boonshoft Museum of Discovery brings back Sloth Tai Chi

Patience, a Linne’s two-toed sloth, is the inspiration for an upcoming Tai Chi class at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery.

Sloth Tai Chi will be held Wednesday, Oct. 2 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The class is centered around the balance, strength, pace, and flexibility of the zoo’s resident sloth, according to a press release. Tai Chi is a low-impact, ancient Chinese physical exercise that has been shown to decrease stress. The practice keeps the body in constant, self-paced slow motion that helps increase flexibility and balance.

“The art of Tai Chi is easily adapted for anyone, from the most fit to those in wheelchairs,” said Tom Melia, Tai Chi instructor at the museum. “It is very safe, and it’s easy to get started.”

The Tai Chi class will begin with an introduction to Patience, followed by a 45-minute beginner class.

Class size is limited to 20 participants, and reservations are required. The class is appropriate for beginners, but all registrants must be 16 years of age or older.

Participants should wear loose, comfortable clothing, and may choose to wear shoes or socks only for the practice. Check-in for this program will begin by 5:45, and participants are encouraged to arrive before 6:00 to complete the required release form.

Guests should plan to enter through the Education Lobby. The next Sloth Tai Chi Class is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2019.

The program fee is $30 for members and $35 for nonmembers.
