Top 10 things to do in Dayton this week

1) DAYTON PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

The Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra is exploring music from Brahms to Bernstein this weekend at the Schuster Center, Second and Main streets, Dayton. Mezzo-soprano Layna Chianakas joins the orchestra for “Brahms: First and Foremost,” a Masterworks Series concert, at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 19 and 20. Cost: $8-$64.30.

The DPO is back at the Schuster Center at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, for “Jeremiah: Fire in the Heart.” The Classical Connections Series concert features compositions by Leonard Bernstein. Cost: $8-$43.

2) “STELLA AND LOU”

After the death of a friend, a widowed bar owner strikes up a life-changing conversation with a female regular in his Philadelphia tavern. That's the setup for playwright Bruce Graham's "Stella and Lou," Dayton Theatre Guild's production of the 2013 comedic drama is directed by Gary Thompson. "Stella and Lou," opening at the Caryl D. Philips TheatreScape, 430 Wayne Ave., Dayton, on Friday, Jan. 19, is presented weekends through Feb. 4. Show times are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday opening weekend, and 8 p.m. Friday, 5 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday the following weekends. 3) WORLD OF WONDER

In addition to two different concerts this weekend, the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra is once again joining with Dayton Performing Arts Alliance partners Dayton Ballet and Dayton Opera for a diverse afternoon of entertainment. The Family Series program, "World of Wonder: Explore the Ballet, Opera and Orchestra," is presented at the Schuster Center, Second and Main streets, Dayton, at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20. 4) “BEEHIVE: THE SIXTIES MUSICAL”

As its name suggests, "Beehive: The Sixties Musical," is filled with memorable hits by female singers from that decade's hit parade. Larry Gallagher's jukebox musical concerns a rising vocal quartet and features songs made popular by Aretha Franklin, Brenda Lee and other vocalists. Tina McPhearson directs the local production of this show, which opens at Dayton Playhouse, 1301 E. Siebenthaler Ave., Dayton, on Friday, Jan. 19. "Beehive: The Sixties Musical" is presented weekends through Feb. 4. Show times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays. Cost: $16, $18. 5) SHIMASAKI SISTERS

Violin-playing siblings Mariko and Kanako Shimasaki have been thrilling audiences since they were grade school students in Springfield. Today, they are building a growing national following. The Shimasaki Sisters join the Springfield Symphony Orchestra at Clark State Performing Arts Center, Kuss Auditorium, 300 S. Fountain Ave., Springfield, at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20. 6) DONNELL RAWLINGS

Donnell Rawlings broke through to mainstream comedy fans as a cast member on "Chappelle's Show" on Comedy Central. However, the Washington, D.C., native is an actor-comedian with a lengthy creative resume that also includes television roles on "The Wire" and "The Corner" and serving as the judge on the series, "Guy Court." Rawlings is performing at the Funny Bone Comedy Club, 88 Plum St., The Greene, Beavercreek, on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 19 and 20. Show times are 7:30 and 10 p.m. Cost: $20-$50. 7) CHRISTOPHER BURK LANDSCAPES

The new show, "Christopher Burk: Illuminating the Everyday," features landscape paintings of frequently overlooked urban environments by the Columbus-based artist. The exhibition opens at the Springfield Museum of Art, 107 Cliff Park Road, Springfield, on Saturday, Jan. 20. "Illuminating the Everyday" is on display through July 1. 9) FUNERAL MOON

Dayton rockers Funeral Moon share an affinity for heavy riffs and pummeling rhythms with its namesake from Australia but don't confuse this crew with the band from Down Under. The local metal act celebrates the release of its debut album at Rockstar Pro Arena, 1106 E. Third St., Dayton, at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20. 10) HEYWOOD BANKS

The origins of musical comedian Heywood Banks are sketchy. There are tall tales about being born on a mountaintop in Tennessee, a grisly restaurant accident and a dreaded case of Spamnesia brought on by a rancid can of lunchmeat. None of those claims can be substantiated, but it's clear he is a performer with a distinctive personal style, a unique world view and a songbook bursting with off-kilter songs like "Toast" and "Big Butter Jesus."
