YOGA AND BEER: Special classes at brewpub, restaurant include rewards

Delicious locally-sourced delicacies, an ice cold craft beer and the great outdoors — how could it get any better? How about some yoga?

Yoga classes that take practitioners out of the studio and into the community — often including beer, wine or food — are becoming increasingly common across the country and in the Dayton area.

“It’s definitely something that is popular,” said Devon Schmidt, instructor and owner of Day Yoga Studio. “It adds a sense of community to the practice, it’s about meeting people where they are.”

Both Day Yoga Studio and Speakeasy Yoga will host upcoming events in conjunction with local businesses. Speakeasy Yoga is teaming up with Table 33 for a Sweat Social on Friday, Aug. 31, while Day Yoga will host a Beer & Yoga class — BrewAsana — at Fifth Street Brew Pub on Saturday, Sept. 8.

“This event (Sweat Social) is something that has been in the works for quite a while,” said Tori Reynolds, teacher and owner of Speakeasy Yoga. “Table 33 is such a great communal place with a wonderful patio, it’s just a perfect fit.”

“Events like this are more than a yoga class, they are an opportunity to connect,” Schmidt said. “And there’s no better way to do that than by sharing a meal or drinks.”

Both of the upcoming events start with a beginner-friendly, open-level class about an hour in length. The Sweat Social class — held on the Table 33 patio — will be followed by drinks, appetizers, desserts and time to socialize. BrewAsana — held on the Fifth Street Brewpub patio — will end with a refreshing pint (or two) of FSB beer.

“I think events like this bring in the ‘yoga curious,’” Reynolds said. “And it might bring in people who are a little hesitant to go to a yoga studio.”

Schmidt agrees.

“You might also be able to get a friend or a spouse to try it and they might find out they like it,” she said.

Both Reynolds and Schmidt stress the importance of partnering with other Dayton businesses.

“It’s so fun to cross collaborate and we definitely want to get our clientele into other business,” Reynolds said.

“We’re very much about the Dayton area and making it fun for people,” Schmidt said.
