🥈SECOND PLACE: James Free Jewelers

When each Daytonian reaches the pearly gates of heaven, Saint Peter gives you the stats on how many times you’ve seen the ubiquitous James Free Jewelers commercial, which probably falls somewhere between Menards and Cedarville Furniture.

In 1940, Mr. Free opened his jewelry store in Dayton with only three employees. By 1960, be became the city’s go-to platinum-smith and earned a reputation for elegant designs and meticulous repairs. In addition to his shop, his work was sold at NCR and Rike’s Departments Stores. In 1998, James Free expanded its brand to Cincinnati, and is now the exclusive jeweler of the Dayton Art Institute and Cincinnati Bengals.
