A national restaurant-delivery service called DoorDash has expanded to the Dayton area, and is offering free delivery service this week as part of an introductory promotion, DoorDash officials said late Wednesday.

DoorDash describes itself as "on-demand company connecting customers with their favorite restaurants." It has entered into agreements with some restaurant chains, but it does not limit delivery options to those business partners. It sends delivery drivers to local, independent restaurants and to chain restaurants that are not partners as well. In the Dayton area, it lists several dozen restaurants as available for its delivery services.

The company does not employ its drivers directly, instead using independent contractors to serve as delivery drivers.

The DoorDash web site lists as part of its coverage area Dayton and some of its populous suburbs such as Beavercreek, Centerville, Kettering, Fairborn, and Miamisburg, as well as Butler County areas such as Hamilton and Middletown. But other suburban areas and surrounding towns are not listed and may not be available for the service — yet. DoorDash officials said they'll be expanding the delivery service's footprint to cover more of the Dayton metropolitan area in the coming weeks.

The service officially launched Wednesday, Sept. 6, and is offering “free delivery all week for new users,” DoorDash officials said.

We asked Hank Couture, DoorDash's Midwest senior strategy and operations manager, for details on how the service works. Here are Couture’s responses:

How does DoorDash work?

“Customers simply input the address to their location into the DoorDash app or on to order from their favorite local and national restaurants. Users can select from a wide range of restaurants in their area and can sort by price, cuisine, most popular, speed of delivery and more to help them make their decision.”

“Once the order has been received by DoorDash, it’s also sent to the respective restaurant where it is prepared and packed for delivery. While the food is being prepared, a delivery pro (who we call “Dashers”) travels to the restaurant, picks it up and then delivers the order right to the customer’s doorstep. Through merchant partnerships, Dashers who use the platform, and our innovative logistics technology, DoorDash supports the entire delivery process.”

Who does the delivery?

“Deliveries are made by “Dashers,” who are independent contractor delivery pros.”

What will the charges be after the first week of free delivery?

“Customer delivery fees will range from $1.99 to $5.99, depending on the restaurant.”

What factors led to expanding to Dayton?

“DoorDash continues to grow and expand all over the country and we’re excited to extend our service to more users in Ohio. We’ve seen tremendous success in the Columbus and Cincinnati area, and so decided that Dayton was perfect for further expansion into Ohio. At launch, Dayton, Kettering, Miamisburg and Beavercreek area residents will have access to delivery from hundreds of local restaurants. In the coming weeks we will continue to expand to the rest of the Dayton metro area.”

What’s the background of the company?

“DoorDash is an on-demand restaurant delivery service founded in 2013. We connect customers with their favorite local and national businesses in more than 500 cities and 45 major metropolitan markets across the United States and Canada. DoorDash empowers merchants to grow their businesses by offering on-demand delivery, data-driven insights, and better in-store efficiency, providing delightful experiences from door to door.”

“Today DoorDash is laser-focused on being the restaurant industry’s ‘last mile’ solution and has grown into a $700 million leader in the on-demand space. In just four years it has become the industry standard for restaurant delivery, serving as the primary off-premise partner for the country’s most prominent chains such as Taco Bell, The Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Chang’s China Bistro and Dunkin’ Donuts, while also championing corner restaurants and local favorites in every city we operate.”
